Kojima's Use Of 'Snake' Name Received John Carpenter's Blessing

Posted 6/22/10 1:23 pm EST by Brian Warmoth in News

Solid Snake

Director John Carpenter is contributing to "F.E.A.R. 3," but it turns out that he also offered support for Hideo Kojima in the Metal Gear Solid series. Carpenter introduced Kurt Russell's character Snake Plissken to the world in his 1981 film "Escape from New York," and Kojima reportedly reached out to him for approval, since the leading man in Metal Gear's name is Solid Snake.

"[Hideo Kojima] has written me and asked me for my blessing on the game and I wrote him back [to say] how about it?" Carpenter told CVG. "He's a very nice man."

The request came before Kojima released his first MSG title, though there isn't a quote from Kojima in the report that says what Solid Snake might have been named if Carpenter had rebuked him. If Carpenter has chosen that response, you have to wonder if we'd be playing games as Solid Eel or Solid Serpent today.

Still, I don't know about you, but as a self-identifying gamer and cinephile, it's cool to know that the guy who made "Halloween" and the man behind "Metal Gear Solid" share a common respect for one another. Carpenter's words weren't as gushing as Guillermo Del Toro's take on "Flower," but he does sound gracious.

What do you think Solid Snake should have been named if Carpenter had frowned on Kojima's use of the name? Are you glad the director OK'd it? Share your reactions in the comment section below.
