Valve founder Gabe Newell has a lot of opinions about the game industry, and he doesn't always have the best things to say about consoles. He has signed on to bring "Portal 2" to the PlayStation 3, however, on the same day that it launches for the Xbox 360 and PC.
"I've been pretty outspoken in my comments about the current generation of game consoles, so I'd really like to thank everyone at Sony for their gracious hospitality and for not repeatedly punching me in the face," Newell said when he arrived on Sony's stage at their E3 keynote Tuesday. "As an industry we're going through a transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, and because of that the needs of game players and game developers are evolving."
Newell has at least enough faith in the PS3's current direction to release "Portal 2" for it and experiment Steam-provided support for its updates.
"I'm very pleased to announce that we'll be bringing 'Portal 2' to the PlayStation 3," Newell stated. "I'm excited that Steam will be part of that experience, and I think that gamers will be delighted with features like Steam Cloud and automatic updates that will make the PlayStation 3 version of 'Portal 2' the best version on any console."
I wonder if Microsoft heard him say that last part.
