MySpace has announced it will launch the MySpace Games Lab in order to help third-party app makers bring more social games to its network. In addition, an internal team will be launched to create more in-house games on MySpace, in a program that is being designed to rival Facebook.
This program will support game developers by providing quick feedback and turnaround on new features added to social games. Partners such as TheBroth and Meez were early participants on the pilot, and now MySpace is looking to expand. Playdom, for example, are helping MySpace promote their games more effectively.
It has to be asked, is this too little too late for MySpace? Facebook dominates the social gaming scene, and although Zynga has added a new chapter to Mafia Wars on MySpace, and developers are becoming increasinlgy interested in using the platform, it doesn't seem likely that Facebook will be dislodged. Utilizing third-party games is nothing new, but if MySpace can take advantage of their in-house productions, we may see some tasty competition.
