Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull and "Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad went on the record recently to say that video game movies are the next big thing, and a "Mass Effect" movie announcement this week reaffirmed that position. BioWare has compared their game trilogy to "Star Wars," and now it looks like they'll get a chance to see how the stories stack up in theaters.
"We are thrilled to be working with Legendary," Arad said in a press release. "EA and BioWare are terrific partners who have created a brilliant piece of fiction with a universe filled with amazing aliens and technology."
With "Mass Effect 3" still in production infancy, it's difficult to tell how much of the trilogy's conclusion is completely fleshed out at this point, but Arad spoke with confidence about what he, Legendary and his son Ari would be taking on.
"More importantly, though, [BioWare] created a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world," he explained. "This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together. All this magic is presented in a fast paced action-adventure that makes for the best kind of movie experience."
The announcement claims that screenwriter Mark Protosevich of "I Am Legend" and "Thor" is currently in discussions to turn "Mass Effect" into a screenplay. With films like "The Dark Knight," "300" and "X-Men" to these producers' credits, there's a lot of cause for optimism at this point. Adapting a game to the screen may be very different from adapting a comic, but this project will be worth keeping an eye on.
