When one purchases a Mac, gaming is hopefully not top of mind. The platform has long been the red-headed stepchild when it comes to new releases, and save for a few companies Blizzard, Mac gamers are forced to wait months, and even years, before a title makes it over to their neck of the woods.
With Valve bringing Steam to Mac, though, there may be a sea change on the horizon. Shorter waits for new games, more compatibility, a unified community. The prospect is certainly exciting for those with fancy MacBook Pros but with nothing to play on them.
Valve's SteamPowered forums have started revealing a number of details regarding the upcoming Valve for Mac beta, so if this is something that concerns you, now would be the time to make sure you're compliant.
Current Details Based On Steam For Mac Closed Beta:
- It will require Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.
- Source games for Mac will require Mac OS X 10.5.8 or higher (Leopard), or 10.6.3 or higher (Snow Leopard).
- It will be Intel only, PowerPC will not be supported.
- Buying certain games for PC (or Mac) will include a free license for the other platform. These games will be labeled as such.
- Source will run natively on OpenGL.
- Mac OS X and Windows users will play on the same servers, join the same lobbies, etc.
The following games have been confirmed for Mac:
- Counter-Strike (presumably Source)
- "The Half-Life Series"
- Left 4 Dead
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Portal
- Portal 2 (upcoming)
- Team Fortress 2
There's currently no release date set for the Steam on Mac, but we've been told that an open beta take place before the actual launch, so expect that to happen first.

The "Super Street Fighter 4" version of Guy is like Brandon Lee's "The Crow." Guy's woman wasn't tossed from a beautiful window nor does he seek sweet, sweet revenge for a grave misdeed … but he does want to put the skids on Metro City's evil!
OK, the only reason Guy reminds us of anti-hero is the fact that his intro video in Arcade mode shows his silhouette bounding from city building to building against a night sky. Just add "Dead Souls" in the mix and boom, you get "The Crow."

Zynga, the company behind "Farmville" and many other popular social games, are to form an alliance with Japanese investment firm Softbank.
By far the most successful publisher on Facebook, Zynga's games are played by up to 252 million users a month, according to AppData. The majority of these players are from the US, where the popularity of social networking has rocketed over the past three years, and has coaxed many casual gamers into spending more time at their PC monitor.

Metal rockers Linkin Park have invaded the App Store with the release of "Linkin Park 8 Bit Rebellion!" With the world existing peacefully in 8-bit harmony, sinister party spoilers PixxelKorp arrive in town ready to indoctrinate the jittery population with a technological upgrade. As we all know of the cash-sapping effects the HD era has brought upon us, it's time to stick it to the man- one pixel at a time.

Rumors about about a new Bizarre Creations Bond game gained some more steam this week, based on some recently registered domain names. Activision's URL choices further indicate that "James Bond: Bloodstone" may not be the only 007 title they have plans for, as BloodstoneGame.com was accompanied on their shopping list by GoldenEyeGame.com.

Hakan is the other new character created for "Super Street Fighter 4." He was announced late for a reason: this Turkish wrestler is a visually striking entrant into the series, and furthermore, a great change of pace character. Hakan douses himself in oil in order to glide around the screen at a steady clip, but also has enough mass to cause serious damage in CQC. In other words, he's no Ryu.

Fresh off their zany, sin-filled marketing campaign for "Dante's Inferno," the crew over at EA has started ramping up the hype for "Dead Space 2," and the above ink blot test is just the beginning. (I don't know about you, but to me it looks like the Grim Reaper being eaten by a venus fly trap. Yes, that means I should probably be put away.)
Today's mailer included the notes of Dr. Samara Yasmin, detailing the mental state of patient 1544C, whoever that is. Apparently the patient is acting a little loopy and has started sketching symbols which imply an attachment to Scient- I mean- Unitology. Here's the full sheet so you can explore her thoughts and feelings in your own time. Oh, and if anyone wants to translate those Unitology symbols using this key, feel free.

A "Shadow of the Colossus" movie showed up in the press last year when "Scorpion King" producer Kevin Misher and and "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li" producer Justin Marks were announced as being on board. It's always hard to tell what stage projects like video game film adaptations are in before they get dated, but a new interview with Marks makes it sounds as though "Shadow" may be moving along and into 3-D to boot.

The U.S. Supreme Court stands ready to rule on California's right to ban the sale and rental of mature games to minors, and their decision could have big implications for the future. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger believed strongly his his state's 2005 law that required retailers to label games and prevent sales to minors. A federal judge blocked the law in 2006, though, and its been waiting on a nod from the nation's highest court before it could go into effect ever since.

If you had any doubts that Rockstar would deliver an M-rated vision of the Old West when "Red Dead Redemption" ships in May, go back to whatever you were doing and enjoy a cold sarsaparilla. The ESRB's decision is in, and they believe you should be 17 or older to experience the game's world of drugs, violence, nudity and harsh language.
