Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima speaks frequently about hefty consequences. In the past, he's said that "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker" delays represent a crime and that consoles are doomed in the near future. Now, he's upping the ante for whatever he's plotting next, and if he doesn't succeed, he says that he will leave video games altogether.
"The next project will challenge a certain type of taboo," Kojima said on his Twitter account, according to a translation at Andriasang. "If I mess up, I'll probably have to leave the industry. However, I don't want to pass by avoiding that. I turn 47 this year. It's been 24 years since I started making games. Today, I got an ally who would happily support me in that risk. Although it's just one person. For a start, it's good."
Kojima is likely talking about something that no one outside his offices is aware of yet, but some crafty message board posters from 2channel have devised a dating game concept spun out of the Metal Gear universe that they think would deserve the "taboo" warning. They've called it "Tokimeki Metal Gear: Girl's Side 1st Mission."
Whether he was actually talking about a dating simulator or not, I think a lot of fans would be disappointed to see Kojima walk aware because of one big risk that didn't pay off. Also, it's hard to tell how big of a taboo he might be contemplating and whether or not it's something that would be controversial in both Japan and North America, since all sorts of different norms exists in the two markets.
