In addition to giving away a free fix for "Splinter Cell: Conviction" freezing problems this week, Ubisoft will be giving away free guns. An MP7A1 Machine Pistol kicks off the first round of what Ubi says will be a weekly series of complimentary DLC releases for the game, and they may be available as soon as today or tomorrow through the game's Extras menu.
The MP7A1 officially comes out on April 15th, according ShackNews, but The Lost Gamer seems to have already seen the weapon in the wild. You can't argue with free DLC, whatever the case may be. Ubisoft hasn't sent a public timetable on how long the offerings will continue, but their model closely resembles the type of distribution EA introduced with "Mass Effect 2" and the Cerberus Network.
Ubisoft's system is instead called Uplay, and future downloadables will include even more weapons, character skins and at least one multiplayer map, according to Joystiq. Tokens can also be unlocked to access more free content there.
If there's anything I like better than DLC it's free DLC, so big props to Ubi for opening some valves on "Conviction." I hope future games take note.
