PopCap Games, the makers of the wildly popular "Bejeweled Blitz" on Facebook, will be introducing a new "Blitz"-style game to the social networking service in the near future. Speaking with John Vechey, one of PopCap's co-founders, I asked whether we'd be seeing more Facebook games from the company, given the success of "Bejeweled Blitz."
"We're definitely doing another 'Blitz' game, but we're also doing some pretty experimental games."
Vechey went on to explain that it won't be "Bejeweled Blitz 2." Instead, PopCap will be adapting one of their other franchises to fit the "Blitz" model, which features short, minute-long play sessions, weekly leaderboards and online achievements.
In addition to the new "Blitz" title, which PopCap CEO David Roberts mentioned is coming "sooner rather than later," PopCap expects to release one or two more Facebook games by year's end. These games will all be tied in to established PopCap franchises, instead of being new IPs, but they'll be altered to fit with the Facebook games marketplace.
Glancing at PopCap's catalog of games, it's clear that just about every one of their major releases would find a good home on Facebook. Will we be seeing "Peggle Blitz"? A Facebook-connected "Plants vs. Zombies"? Asynchonous games of "Bookworm Adventures"? We'll just have to wait and see.
