Yes, Sony's PS3 motion controller, which at one point was called "Gem," was officially introduced without a name at E3 in 2009. Sony has reportedly confirmed, however, that it will host a panel at GDC in San Francisco this March entitled "Introducing the PlayStation 3 motion controller." Without knowing what Sony plans on displaying, it's tough to tell whether or not the event will provide a name for the device or just another rare look at the colorful ball on the end of a black stick that will allow enhanced swordplay on the PS3.
SCEA platform research manager David Coombes and SCEA developer support man Kirk Bender will host the panel on March 11, according to GamesIndustry.biz. At 60 minutes long, the session should provide ample time for Sony to de-cloak the device that Sony believes the Wii and Microsoft's Project Natal will "have trouble matching."
Sony has said that around ten games will be ready to ship when their motion controller launches this fall. With Project Natal publicly getting commitments from Ubisoft, Guitar Hero, "Fable 3" and Epic, I'm sure Sony would like to wow some developers while they have the spotlight, so there may be some pressure to perform.
What would you like Sony to announce when they show off their PS3 motion controller at GDC? Do you think their new device will be able to compete with Project Natal? Sound off in the comment section below.
