Rockstar Eye of Sauron

Earlier this week I spoke with a former Rockstar New York employee regarding the state of the company and what it was like to work there. In one statement, the source compared Rockstar New York to the "Eye of Sauron," a reference to a structure in "The Lord of the Rings" which would allow the Sauron, the series' antagonist, to spy on the goings-on of Middle-earth. In the case of Rockstar, the source was referring to the company's habit of suddenly focusing on a single project or studio after relatively minimal guidance for months on end. Not a terribly flattering comparison, but it seems Rockstar has seen fit to respond in a surprisingly light-hearted way.

DJ Hero

"DJ Hero 2" clearly doesn't need to be kept a secret until Activision names it explicitly in a press release, and DJ David Guetta can now be considered off the hook for anything he might have spoiled by alluding to it in an interview. Thanks to "a Future Version of the Popular Music Videogame" taking up a huge share of the headline in a new Activision contest, we can probably all safely assume that "DJ Hero 2" -- or "DJ Hero: [The Inserted Subtitle]," whatever the naming system of choice may be -- is currently in the works.

Trojan Horse

What, you thought "God of War" had the monopoly of ancient Greece? Not if Nintendo has anything to say about it! Their new RPG, "Glory of Heracles," is set in the land of minotaurs, Zeus and gyros, and to get folks into the spirit, Nintendo sent along the game with an adorable paper craft Trojan Horse.

Instead of marauders, the horse had the DS cart hiding in its secret compartment. Thankfully this secret compartment was a lot easier to deal with than the great "Professor Layton" puzzle box debacle of 2009.

The next major release from Nintendo is the sequel to "Endless Ocean" and, if the trend continues, the game will likely arrive in a dead fish, "Godfather"-style.

Mega Man Zero

Capcom officially has Mega Man plans that reach beyond "Mega Man 10" for consoles in 2010. A Japanese landing page for their new "Rockman Zero Collection" popped up on Capcom.co.jp this week, indicating that a batch of the Gameboy Advance titles known as the "Mega Man Zero" series in the U.S. will be available on April 22nd for 3,990 yen (approximately $44).

Tim Gunn

Tim Gunn of TV's "Project Runway" knows quite a bit about the world of fashion. Video games...not so much, as evidenced by his enthusiastic but ultimately less than exemplary performance on "Big Buck Safari" (pictured). But he does seem to have an opinion on Super Mario's classic overalls and work boots. We sat down with him to get his take on the gaming world's most famous look. By the way, this may be my favorite video ever:

Assassin's Creed

The other day, Ubisoft revealed that there was a new "Assassin's Creed" game is on the way and it'll be the first in the series to include a multiplayer mode. Following that announcement, reports were coming out that an Ubisoft representative had given more details to CVG. The rep said that "the game will take place with the same hero, which is Ezio, and will follow-up the story that took place in 'Assassin's Creed 2.'"

Interesting, but considering this is pretty big news I wanted to get a confirmation from our own Ubisoft representative. And with that comes even more interesting news: That the new "Assassin's Creed" is coming this year. Here's the quote from our rep:

Echoing the Wii HD speculation last, an industry analyst has predicted another new Nintendo system. This time it's a handheld successor to the DS, and the Electronic Entertainment Design and Research Group (EEDAR) watchman making the forecast says the hardware will be on the market within 15 months.

GDC 2010

GDC may be the nerdier younger brother of E3, but that doesn't make it any less awesome. I actually prefer GDC for its slower pace, quieter halls and better access to developers. It's also home to my favorite gaming awards show, the Independent Gaming Festival, which highlights the best and brightest in the indie development scene.

But I wouldn't say GDC is really high on "spectacle." At least not until GDC 2010 rolls around. Behold the new hype-tastic commercial from the guys at Mega64.

Fantasy Earth Zero

The RPG moguls at Square Enix have joined with the US division of the publisher Gamepot for a new MMO, and they're giving a micro-transaction-based free-to-play model a whirl when they launch it. "Fantasy Earth Zero" will try to reproduce the company's success stories with the "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest" franchises in a whole new realm. And it will do so while sharing its acronym name with Wilmer Valderrama's character Fez from "That '70s Show."
