Vicious Cycle Software is aware that 2009's "Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard" wasn't a good game. Overt references to the critical reception and development of the title smothers "Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond" like a wool blanket on a steamy afternoon. And while there is much to be said about just how bad "Eat Lead" was, it should be noted that "Blood Bath and Beyond" is much different and in some respects, a much improved game over its predecessor.

Just because you know the eventual outcome in a game doesn't mean that it can't be a worthwhile playing experience, and Bungie stressed that in describing their approached to "Halo: Reach." The new prequel treads on events already established in the "Halo"-verse, so it presented a significant challenge to the creative team when they began mapping it out. [There are spoilers after the jump, by the way, in case you haven't played any "Halo."]

That Apple press conference on January 27th that's rumored to be the launchpad for a reinvented Tablet PC may very well include some work by Electronic Arts. The company was lumped in with a stack of media giants including the New York Times Co., Condé Nast Publications Inc., CBS Corp. and Walt Disney Co. on a list of behind-the-scenes collaborators working to harness the unofficial iPad's capabilities.

While some developers may be looking ahead to the Apple tablet in the coming weeks, Square Enix has dropped a juicy piece of news for the iPhone and iPod touch. In an announcement about as pared down as a Twitter haiku, the "Final Fantasy" caretakers revealed that both "FFI" and "FFII" will appear in the App Store.

Casey Hudson, the project director of "Mass Effect 2," stopped by the MTV offices today to discuss the forthcoming release of the game next Tuesday. While the interview covered a wide range of subjects, we decided to pull out one interesting segment in which Hudson talks about when we can expect to see the end of the trilogy.

Although Iron Lore, the developer behind "Titan Quest," was shuttered in 2008, members of the team went on to form Crate Entertainment...because you can never have too many crates! The company's first game is called "Grim Dawn" and will follow a lot of the action/RPG tenants of "Diablo," complete with skill trees, exploration and a heavy emphasis on loot.

While Child's Play gets most of the gaming charity attention, it doesn't mean there aren't other groups trying to do good in the video game world. Take OneBigGame, for example. The organization brings together great game designers, has them make great games, and then donates the proceeds to charities for kids. The first major release for the company is "Chime" (pictured), a puzzle game from Zoe Mode.

"Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars," released in March and October of 2009 for Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, respectively, arrived with little fanfare on the App Store earlier this week. I've spent a bit of time tooling around with Rockstar's isometric representation of the Liberty City built for 2008's blockbuster release, "Grand Theft Auto IV," and the experience easily measures up to what you get out of the versions released for the dedicated handheld gaming devices. Assuming you can get over not having any real buttons to press.

Bethesda was supposed to announce a mystery MMO last year that never came to light, and some recent court filings suggested that the title might be a secret MMO not related to the "Fallout" series. Well, the new word on the Internet is that Bethesda's project is an "Elder Scrolls" MMO in the tradition of "World of Warcraft," and an announcement may be on its way soon.

Way back when the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" Xbox 360 bundles were announced, Activision acknowledged that no PS3 equivalent was in the works, and it wasn't hard to see that the game had picked its primary platform partner. Now, 360 owners are about to see another perk -- 30-day advance access to "MW2" DLC.
