Nintendo Breaks Silence About Possible DS Successor

Posted 1/6/10 3:20 pm EST by Brian Warmoth in 3DS / DS, News

Nintendo DSi

Nintendo's DSi XL has yet to hit American shores, and with the DS series still performing well around the globe, the company likely won't rush any plans they have for a true new handheld platform. That doesn't mean they don't know what features they want it to have, however. Unlike the Wii HD, which Nintendo flatly dismissed as nonexistent, the DS's successor is apparently fair game for public conversation.

"[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told a Japanese newspaper, according to Kotaku.

Basically, it sounds like Nintendo will be looking to compete with the iPhone and iPod touch's accelerometer capabilities by porting some concepts over from the Wii. Iwata didn't indicate that Nintendo's new handheld exists in any material form just yet, but his confirmation that they know what they want it to do is definitely noteworthy.

What Nintendo is not planning to integrate, however, is cellular phone functionality, according to the report. So anyone hoping for a DS phone in the near future can keep on wishing.

What features would you like to see Nintendo include on their handheld platform? What have been the DS's biggest shortcomings? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
