'New Super Mario Bros. Wii' Grabs 8th Place In Japanese Mario Game Sales

Posted 1/4/10 6:49 pm EST by Brian Warmoth in News, Wii

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

"New Super Mario Bros. Wii" may be inspiring aggravating competition with its co-op play, but it's also giving past Mario games a run for their money. Recent unit sales reports have "NSMBW" right behind "Super Mario Land 2" and "Super Mario World" after four weeks in Japanese stores. That would put it more than halfway toward dethroning "Super Mario Land" for third place overall in the country.

The infographic showcasing the Mario rankings comes courtesy of the user Michan over on NeoGAF, and the numbers are based on Media Create Sales numbers from December 21-27, 2009.

The original "Super Mario Bros." sits comfortably and nearly untouchably at the top of the chart with 6.81 million units under its belt. "New Super Mario Bros." for the DS lurks behind it in second place with 5.57 million, and will probably remain out of reach from its Wii successor.

"Super Mario Sunshine" sadly didn't crack the floor of its franchise family's chart, though "Super Mario Galaxy" did squeak in toward the bottom just below the million mark. In other trips down memory lane that this chart may take you on, "Super Mario All-Stars" existed, and that little V-for-victory sign Mario made after finishing a level in "Super Mario World" was a great reminder that the Italian plumber was made in Japan.

How high do you expect to see "NSMBW" sales go? Do you think it will top "Super Mario Land" in Japan? Share your predictions in the comment section below.
