'Plants vs. Zombies' Creeping On To iPhones Next Month

Posted 12/30/09 5:30 pm EST by Brian Warmoth in iPhone / iPad, News

Plants vs. Zombies

PopCap's Garth Chouteau said a "Plants vs. Zombies" port to the iPhone might be doable, and a post to the company's official Facebook account confirmed that much with a newly revealed launch goal of January 2010.

"Look out for it in January 2010," PopCap wrote on Facebook in response to inquiries about when "Plants vs. Zombies" would appear in the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch.

For those uninformed, "Plants vs. Zombies" is a flat-out beautifully executed casual game that requires the player to seed various obstacles on lawns and swimming pools to protect a home against the living dead.

The undead tower defense game nabbed MTV Multiplayer's #5 slot on our "Top 5 Games of 2009" list. Squeezing all its options -- which benefit heavily from a swift mouse -- onto the iPhone's screen will definitely be a challenge, but if the port goes over smoothly there's going to be a big new dog in the world App Store games.

PopCap has already done a respectable job condensing "Bejeweled 2" and "Peggle" onto Apple's screen, so there's plenty of reason to be optimistic. Just make sure your fingers are in shape and limbered up prior to diving in.

Do you plan on checking out "Plants vs. Zombies" on the iPhone? How well do you think the game will play on a smaller screen? Share your reactions in the comment section below.
