Zhu Zhu Pets, a line of robotic hamster toys that are making a run at becoming the the 2009 holidays season's Tickle Me Elmo, will be getting a shot at the video game market as well. Activision and Cepia, LLC, the St. Louis-based toy-maker responsible for Zhu Zhus, have announced that they plan to target the DS in 2010 for the toys' debut.
“Zhu Zhu Pets success in 2009 speaks for itself and we’re confident it will be even bigger in 2010,” Activision Publishing general manager David Oxford said in a press release.
The Pets have been making headlines this week for their popularity on toy shelves, as well as for the Consumer Product Safety Commission tests they recently passed, earning a clean bill of health on the heels of a public scare that one of the models might contain toxic levels of antimony. Cepia is no doubt quite pleased with those results, as well as with their newfound destination on the DS.
“Ever since Zhu Zhu Pets exploded in popularity, launching a video game has felt like a natural fit in product evolution,” Cepia's director of marketing strategies and brand development Natalie Hornsby explained in the announcement. “We share our fans’ excitement in bringing Zhu Zhu Pets to the video game space, and think this will help us reach more kids to engage in the Zhu Zhu Pets experience.”
