EA's CEO John Riccitiello may have spoken prematurely at UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference in New York Wednesday when he proclaimed that "Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace." Though Microsoft has publicly attached the name Project Natal to its forthcoming motion control system, Sony has been somewhat cagier. In response to the reveal, however, the company has revealed the Gem may not be the final name given to its magic wand.
"We haven't announced final name at this point," Sony Computer Entertainment of America director of communications Patrick Seybold told Kotaku. He stated that "Gem" was in fact "an early code name for the product" though.
That clarification definitely doesn't take Gem out of the running for the controller's eventual title, even if it remains officially nameless for the time being. The controller, which appeared at E3 this year, has been tagged to appear in stores in next spring.
Spring isn't all that far away, though. The controller will have to be called something by the time its boxes are designed, whether it's Gem, Sonic Screwdriver or Light Bulb.
What do you think of the name Gem? Do you have any proposals of your own for Sony? Share your suggestions in the comment section below.
