The intro video for the original "Left 4 Dead" was one of the best pre-rendered cutscenes I've ever seen. It so perfectly captured the spirit of the game (killing zombies), effective tactics against the special zombies, and the personalities of the four survivors. It was funny, intense and visually excellent.
Valve's high standards have apparently continued on through to "Left 4 Dead 2," as seen in the leaked intro video for that game:

The news that "Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes" was being localized for release in the States came as a pleasant surprise to fans of Capcom’s Vs. fighting series. It was a twisted web of licensed proprieties that finally came together in order to culminate in an almost character-complete roster for the games upcoming release as "Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars." Of the 22 characters that were the game’s original lineup, all but one will not be making the trip across the Pacific, Hakushon Daimaō, from Tatsunoko series The Genie Family.

The "Monster Hunter" franchise's reach has always been limited in the United States. The series is a Pokémon-level phenomenon in its native Japan, but has only recently been upgraded from "obscure curio" to "cult hit" on this side of the Pacific. The real barrier between "MoHun" and Western success has been its lack of online play. Though every "Monster Hunter" can be played solo, it's impossible to access the game's best bits without other human players. Hardcore, grind-intensive, multiplayer action RPGs plain need an online option to find an audience in the United States.

By now you're probably hip deep in the wilds of Pandora, thanks to the release of "Borderlands" this week. Unfortunately it seems that the skill tree of the Siren is a bit busted, due to one of its top tier skills not being quite as effective as it seems like it should.

"Kane and Lynch" has been percolating in Hollywood development for quite a while now, but according to producer Adrian Askerieh it's set to begin filming March, and they've tapped perennial action hero and Bruce Willis to appear as Kane. The project has been talked about for nearly as long as gamer's have known who the two title characters were, but nabbing the "Sin City" and "Die Hard" may get things rolling.

Tokio Hotel, German pop rock juggernaut, was in the office this week to talk about their new album, "Humanoid." Their arrival gave me a perfect excuse to kick off a brand new feature: The MTV Big Buck Challenge.

Infinity Ward's announcement that "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" on PC would not have dedicated servers but instead opt for a matchmaking setup powered by IWNET provoked a vocal response among gamers, including an online petition that's now surpassed 125,000 signatures. The studio has been clear that they see that backlash, but also defended their move to IWNET, calling the peer-to-peer infrastructure a major investment.

Rewards program memberships won't be the only thing arriving in email inboxes from Microsoft this week. Russ shared his impressions of Facebook on the Xbox 360 earlier this month, but by Friday Microsoft plans on opening its new dashboard demo up to more users. The update, which will incorporate Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm functionality into the Xbox Live experience won't be ready for everyone this week, but after soliciting sign-ups from existing XBL users, new invites should be out in the next few days.

At the top, an icon and title which represents your online persona in "Street Fighter 4." At the bottom, the callsign which represents your online persona in "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2." If you think they're pretty similar then you're probably not blind. Granted "Modern Warfare 2" does offer up a healthy number of other ways to customize your character, but in terms of what your foes see when they fight you, the callsign is your primary representation.
At an event in New York City today, I spoke with Seth Killian, Capcom's Community Manager, about the similarities.

Microsoft emails promising "cool stuff" have reportedly been distributed to select Xbox Live users as part of a new mystery rewards program. Though the emails don't explicitly say what users will receive for signing up by the October 21st deadline, they do brandish large headlines implying exclusivity and shiny things.
