Assassin's Creed 2

Achievement and trophy hunters the world over are breathing a sigh of relief over what appears to be the official list for "Assassin's Creed 2." The first game featured some of the most infuriating achievements, requiring you to hunt down hundreds of worthless flags and evil Templars. This time around it appears the achievements are more story related and manageable, with just one collect-a-thon in the form of missing feathers.

Dante's Inferno

An achievement in "Dante's Inferno" call "Bad Nanny" hit a nerve with a prominent nanny organization, and a spokesperson for The International Nanny Association (INA) is thoroughly unamused by the idea of rewarding players for killing unbaptized infants. In fact, their reaction has prompted calls for action among the group's nannies.

So a box featuring the "Dragon Age: Origins" seal arrived today. Within it was a dram of something or other and a threatening note. So I did what any normal person would do. I drank the vial and went about my day. You can enjoy this experience in video form above.

Funny story, though. The box also had a review copy of the game, but I didn't actually realize this fact until the box was in the trash. Thankfully Libe Goad and Stephen Totilo were quick to inform me of its inclusion before the friendly neighborhood garbage person came 'round and disposed of it. In my defense it was under all the hay, in well-camouflaged wrapping paper, but it did make me feel like a bit of an idiot nonetheless.

Blu-Ray

The Internet collectively hiccuped Thursday with speculation that Microsoft might introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. Based on comments made by Microsoft's CEO, those predictions have now been unequivocally shot down, thanks to a statement by Xbox Live's online voice Major Nelson, who reinforced the 360's commitment to downloadable HD content and said no plans for a Blu-Ray device were in the works.

Filler

The "wife test," devised by game designer Warren Spector, consists of three questions:

1) Will my wife play this game?
2) Will my wife want to play this game again?
3) Will my wife play this game even when I’m not around?

"Filler" passes the wife test like no game since "Rock Band." It’s a simple game, but that’s much of what makes it so accessible, and so addictive.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" for PC has been a contentious issue on the Internet this week, with Infinity Ward announcing their revamped peer-to-peer IWNET multiplayer setup in lieu of dedicated servers. A pro-server petition that followed that announcement now has more than 140,000 signatures, but the real test will be how well the game sells. Those stats should become apparent soon, as "MW2" is now available for pre-order on Steam, where the game's system requirements have also been revealed. Check them out after the jump.

Hook Champ

In this week's iPhone gaming round-up, I'm pulling out two quick recommendations and something to keep an eye out for. Think you can handle it? Good, lets go!

"Hook Champ" ($2.99, Lite Version Available)
Old school to the max, "Hook Champ" features "Bionic Commando"-style swing gameplay at top speed with retro graphics and shotguns. You're basically tasked with swiping the jewels from a variety of underground temples before swinging to freedom. The game's art style is very similar to that of indie mainstay, "Spelunky," featuring an Indiana Jones knock-off as the hero. There's a light RPG element, too, as you can upgrade the hero's rope, weapons and even his rocket boots. Definitely worth the $3 asking price, but there's a Lite version if you're still not convinced.

Trine

After the PC version's release came and went, and folks were still left without a PSN version of "Trine," questions were asked. More questions were asked were asked the the game released on the PSN in Europe, but not in the States. Thankfully those questions become somewhat moot today, as the game is releasing to the world. Great news for folks who enjoy unique puzzle platformers involving wizards with traditional wizard head gear (among others).

But, what the hey, lets find out what took so long, shall we? The developer, Frozenbyte, was more than happy to oblige in their forums:

GTA Chinatown Wars

Released for the Nintendo DS earlier this year, "Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars" debuted on the PSP this week. The new version of "Chinatown Wars" offers much of the same experience as far as your ability to blow up, assassinate, terrorize and drug-hustle your way through Liberty City's underworld as its DS counterpart, with a variety of tweaks to the graphics and controls, as well as some extra missions exclusive to the PlayStation format.

where the wild things are

I can't explain how disheartened I felt when I first read reviews for Spike Jonze's film adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are." Like most people, the childrens' book was an essential piece of my childhood reading along with others like "Goodnight Moon" and any of the Dr. Seuss books. And with the unfortunate history lent to film-to-game adaptations, it's not surprising that I first approached "Where the Wild Things Are" (the game) with much trepidation. That said, the game actually manages to tread rather competent waters, delivering a solid experience despite a few taxing design choices.
