'Small Worlds' - A Low-Fi 'Metroidvania' Flash Treat

Posted 10/30/09 12:30 pm EST by Russ Frushtick in PC, Reviews

Small Worlds

If you have 15 minutes to kill today, and you enjoy the thrill of exploration without the threat of death, check out "Small Worlds." The platforming adventure game features an extremely unique, quasi-throwback presentation style and a peaceful, stress-free gaming experience for the price of free.

The only controls in "Small Worlds" are on the arrow keys (or WASD, if you prefer). There are no enemies, no pick-ups, no extra lives. It's basically an environment-exploration game backed by an ambient score reminiscent of games like "Knytt".

I think my favorite aspect is how each "level" beings, super zoomed in on a handful of pixels. Your character is merely three of these pixels, but as you progress the camera will zoom out, revealing more and more of the world. It's almost like a "Where's Waldo" in reverse, starting and the titular bespecaled wander and then zooming out to reveal the chaotic scene around him. In "Small Worlds" case, though, the scene consists of peaceful caves, snowy peaks and futuristic underground dwellings.

So yeah, definitely play it.
