The number of unauthorized Xbox 360 memory devices that are compatible with Microsoft's console is about to get crunched. A new system update coming to the system will cripple any plugged in hardware that Microsoft hasn't approved, and save files could suffer if they happen to get caught in the crossfire.
"When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360," Xbox Live's Major Nelson wrote on his blog. "If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to 'back it up,' you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update."
Nelson took an uncharacteristically stern tone for the announcement, urging users to back up now or suffer the consequences later.
"If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games," he stated.
The move seems targeted mostly at pirated software and user mods that Microsoft would rather see left off their systems. But it also triggered a bit of backlash on Major Nelson's blog. The change won't mean much to users of Microsoft Memory Units, but for those who hunted down a deal in Hong Kong, that savings may now turn into a liability.
