Facebook, Twitter And Last.fm Preparations In New Xbox System Update

Posted 9/23/09 3:00 pm EST by Brian Warmoth in News, Xbox 360

A new Xbox 360 System Update appeared today, but changes it makes in the interests of Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm integration probably won't turn any heads. In fact, downloaders may find themselves wondering exactly what their getting out of the installation. Never fear, though, because Major Nelson posted to his blog in the wee small hours of the morning to assure everyone that there are no new features contained in the update -- just preparations for things to come.

"Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update," Major Nelson wrote on his blog. "If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you’ll be back online in a few moments."

That process should come as old hat to XBL users, but to see no noticeable changes taking place may spark some head scratches. And Major Nelson understands this.

"There are no new features or changes in this update," he explained. "This update is preparation for additional system enhancements (Facebook/Twitter/Last.FM) that will arrive later this year."

Just what those enhancements involved will remain to be discovered, but it looks like Microsoft is pushing along to meet their end of year promise for integration.

Have you noticed any differences since you installed today's System Update? What do you want to be able to do with Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm when they become available on XBL? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
