In the pantheon of formative video games, few are as important as id Software's "Wolfenstein 3D." I'm not certain that it was the original first-person shooter, but it was certainly the one that introduced an adoring public to a genre which would one day give us the likes of "Halo" and "Call of Duty." Of course, what all this means is that the latest entry in the series, "Wolfenstein" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, has some mighty big jackboots to fill. Does it? Read more...

Yesterday we learned that Bethesda still has another title planned for a 2010 release that's not "Brink," "Fallout: New Vegas" or "Rage." Today I'm asking you...what do you think it'll be?

No, the above shot is not from the trailer...it's from this fake trailer that released a few days ago, but since the real one is watermarked to hell I figured that would be the next best thing.

Set off by a story on CVG saying that, according to Activision, there will be no multiplayer beta for "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," Infinity Ward's community manager, Robert Bowling, fired back.

Posted on his personal blog, Bowling stated that Infinity Ward hasn't written off the possibility of a public multiplayer beta, but the current plan is to have an internal beta first:

No, you didn't just miss the release of "Final Fantasy XIII." Square Enix is just sorta jumping the gun a bit, and 1UP captured some gameplay of "Final Fantasy XIV" running on the show floor at GamesCom 2009.

You'll have to excuse the German (unless you're German), but the video does give you a good sense of, well, running around and fighting monsters. Good to hear they've got that tricky part down. People had some issues with the steep learning curve in "Final Fantasy 11," so here's hoping this one's a bit more kind to newbies. The video doesn't seem to imply that it will be, but hey, ya never know!

More media continues to pour out from GamesCom 2009, including this trailer for "Battlefield: Bad Company 2," which gives a sampling of some of the activities in the game's multiplayer.

While I appreciate the dramatic camera angles and storytelling in this trailer, I can't help but prefer something like the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" multiplayer trailer, which uses straight gameplay footage to show off the new features.

That being said, I think "Bad Company 2" multiplayer has a lot of promise, having seen it at E3, and its March 2010 release date means we should be somewhat out of the "Call of Duty" blast zone by the time it drops.

The above video features Sony talking about the new features in PS3 3.0. It's the sorta upgrade that I expect from a firmware upgrade, with very obvious improvements to the UI and feature-set. I'm not saying they're on Microsoft's level in terms of functionality but hey, at least they're trying!

One stupid thing I would like to see is a revamping of the trophies system. I'm aware that this won't actually happen, but currently trophies are missing the sorta bang that achievements have, and I think the issue is that there are no numbers associated with them. If someone asked me how much I played "Halo 3," telling them that I got 800 achievement points gives them a pretty good idea about how much time I spent. If someone asked me the same thing about inFamous, saying "12 bronze, 3 silver and a gold" doesn't exactly convey the same information. But yeah, that's just me...what about you guys? What do you think is missing from PS3 3.0 firmware?

Tim is on vacation (the bastard), but that doesn't mean you won't get three games worth checking out this week. You can probably guess my number one pick, but hey, it's too damn good not to give it the nod! Watch "Game Plan" episode 4 above, and we'll be back to our normal format next week.
