Chalking this one up as what will probably be the most shocking news of the week, Sam Raimi, director of "Spider-Man," "Evil Dead" and, most recently, "Drag Me To Hell," will be helming a new project based on "World of WarCraft."
Variety is reporting that the movie, currently titled "WarCraft," will be live-action and will be produced by Charles Roven, of "The Dark Knight" fame.
I have a call in to Blizzard to get their reaction on the announcement, as this will be the first time anyone has made a movie based on one of their properties.
Personally I can't imagine anything short of a painful, expensive disaster. I mean, "StarCraft" I could sorta see, but how do you take orcs and elves seriously? Peter Jackson pulled it off, but the success of "Lord of the Rings" (both critically and financially) was a total shock to most people. Somehow I can't imagine Raimi catching lighting in a bottle the same way.
