Lunchtime Video - Time To Worry About The 2009 Xbox 360 Line-up?

There are early signs that Microsoft's Xbox 360 line-up this year might be a little thin. I break it down in today's Lunchtime Video.

Uh Lorand, that is exactly what EA stated. ME2 might come, but it certainly will not be day and date.

From how I see it the forecast of games coming for the 360 of '09 is bare bones dry. I'm actually considering picking up a PS3 since nothing is really happening on the 360 this year.

Another PS3 exclusive: whatever Team Ico is working on (it probably won't be out this year but hopefully we'll see something!).

Lee85: EA would never NOT release a game on ps3 if it is at all possible -- nor can they afford it as of now. So yeah, ME2 is PS3 as well, unless stated otherwise by EA.

Also you say we can't really bank on Alan Wake. I don't really agree at this point. Moreover Splinter Cell Conviction is almost a 100% for sure this year as well. On the SP forums at Ubisfot the dev team stated they would start to show the game again after April 1st of this year. So with that I count 4 so far. Halo ODST, Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, and the new GTA IV expansion. Obviously they are going to announce exclusives at E3 for the fall without question because Greenberg has already stated they have absolutely not revealed the 09 lineup yet. So let’s just take a look at what is likely for this year so far and put them against what Sony most likely has for the year. Uncharted 2 versus Alan Wake, Infmaous versus Splinter Cell, Halo ODST versus Heavy Rain, R&C versus GTA IV expac 2. Even if you take out the expac that leaves pretty much Sony with one additional game so far. We all know Sony likes to blow there load early and R&C is likely the only title left they have yet to announce for the full year. That would MS would only have to announce one new title for the rest of 09 and we all know that is not going to happen. It will almost for sure be a few more some likely being smaller, but possibly some key franchises from Rare. Seems to me things are likely to be more even than not. Of course people were saying the same thing about 08 and we all know how the holiday titles performed during 08 in retrospect and that is thing about MS they always deliver during the holidays. You also do not want to overflow the schedule either because there lots of solid 3rd party games coming this fall. Take for example 07, way too many grade A titles in short period of time and they have to balance those with the rest. On a side note you brought up ME2 as being multiplatform. That is true, but Ngai already stated his rep only said 360/PC. So that is likely to be the case come early 2010. I do still think it is kind of silly for MS to hold all it’s cards until E3, but if they do they better blow the doors off because I’m sure the other two companies will have some epic games to show as well.

Not sure I really see the point here? We already know they aren't releasing there 2009 lineup yet because they have said it only a half a dozen times now this year. If after E3 they don't have anything to talk about I might agree. I have all the consoles too and what's on the PS3 for 2009 for the rest of the year? Uncharted 2, Infamous, and maybe Heavy Rain in the west. I don't really know of anything else do you? I guess a new Ratchet too, but eh. I can think of three console side exclusives for the 360 this year as well, Halo ODST, Alan Wake and Splinter Cell Conviction. I don't really see any advantges overall as of yet for sure and I'm sure there will not be any after E3 either. Also what is all this about no MS announcement at GDC either? That would be silly imo. I'll also think MS needs to rethink the way they are doing there announcements and spread them out moreso. Holding your cards all the way to E3 is just silly, but they always bring during the holiday qaurter so I have no doubts there. With that said they did say at this E3 they would be shifting their policies and show some stuff for 2010 this year.

The same exact thing was said last year. Aaron Greenberg already said they haven't reveal everything they have for 2009. Also don't forget the titles that already released this year like Star ocean 4 and Halo wars. [lost planet 2 and ME 2?]Ninja Blade looks alright,not that good though agreed. For the fall all we know is Halo 3:ODST and Forza 3 is rumored to release this year. I don't think we will see much at gdc since it's nothing special,wait till E3 especially since it's a month earlier this year.

Maybe MS not showing at GDC this year is just better judgment than last year considering the two games mentioned besides Gears of War 2 were not worth the hype. Should I worry my most wanted games of this year are multi-platform? I hope not.

I have all the consoles and enjoy them too, but we do seem to be a bit more in the dark when it comes to 360 exclusives compared to PS3 (the Wii has a whole other thing going on with their strategies). I guess it'd look better if we were more sure about games like Alan Wake and Splinter Cell, but we really don't. I know you mentioned Forza 3, but wasn't there talk of Turn 10 taking over PGR as well. I wonder if they'll try to get more exclusive DLC (did this strategy help sales over PS3 versions I'm not sure). Also, to add to the Sony exclusive list, isn't Heavy rain supposed to come out this year. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

@grady-san, What Lorand said, plus God of War in early 2010. Say what you will of Sony's machine and the interest publishers have to support it with third-party content, but it does have some nice exclusive games lined up from proven top-tier studios. I have all the consoles, so I'm happy no matter what, but Microsoft's radical shift in not showing anything at GDC this year (compared to the last two) signals that something's different. Could just be the economy or a new hype schedule. Or it could be a thinner line-up.

Not to sound like a 360 fanboy… but Steven shouldn’t the concern be about Sony’s lineup for 2009? What major exclusives (or lack of) are coming out for the PS3 that have the Sony fans drooling in anticipation? I honestly can't think of any, I myself own both systems, and find myself wondering what to even buy for my PS3.

I own Xbox360, and... I guess I haven't thought about what's out there for this year yet. Now I hear about it, I am a bit worried; there really isn't a major title being marketed from MS! Well, at least we got a lot of new games, albeit multi-platform, for this holiday, right? Maybe this is a sign of first party exclusives diminishing.
