Knock offs are common on the iPhone application store, though it usually happens after a popular game's been released, but demand for still-in-development "Peggle" on the iPhone has prompted someone to take the situation into their own hands, producing the brazenly named "Peggie."

"Peggle" might not be available on the iPhone yet, but you don't need to wait for PopCap Games to finish work on the official version -- that's what "Peggie" is for. (Click the link to open iTunes)
There are several "Peggle"-like games already available on the iTunes application store, but they tend to distances themselves from PopCap's monster and make comparisons to classic pachinko, which "Peggle" also draws heavily from.
Not "Peggie," though. The name and basic gameplay comes straight from "Peggle," even though the game's developers, JSeuss, jokingly claims the name comes from the phrase "Pegs In Spaaaace!"

"We know we're similar to the other peg-and-ball game out there," reads the game's official description, "but we want to be different -- and your suggestions can make it happen. Your continued support and ideas can bring this game to greatness."
It's not much of a surprise most of the pachinko-related games have shown up in the wake of PopCap's announcement that "Peggle" is coming to the iPhone in early March, highlighting a continued tension on the application store between independent developers and major publishers investing on the platform.
While "Peggie" nails the basics of "Peggle," it lacks the ridiculous art and layered gameplay mechanics that make it so addicting. On the other hand, "Peggie" is only $1.99 and it's likely "Peggle" will cost more than that.
Is $1.99 enough for you to convert?
