“Halo 3″ was the most played game on Xbox Live in 2008 according to a top 10 list released by Microsoft today, but gamers might be shocked at what else ended up on the list. The list of top Xbox game downloads also packs some surprises.

There are several demos featured on Major Nelson’s list, but the most notable is “Too Human.” Other Xbox 360 releases with a multiplayer component featured on the list — “Call of Duty: World at War” and “Battlefield: Bad Company” – also had the full game show up.

That didn’t happen with “Too Human.” It at least shows people were interested in trying “Too Human,” even if they didn’t go out and buy it. As for me, I only played “Too Human” at a press event. Once.

It’s a little shocking — but pleasantly surprising — to see older Xbox Live Arcade titles like “Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3,” “UNO,” and “DOOM” still selling. How are they finding these games? Word of mouth? I own nine games on the list below.
