I played 10 PSN games for fun in 2008 and finished two of them.
As I did last year, I've compiled a list of the games that I played for fun in 2008. One list per major gaming platform.
(Check out the rest of my 2008 Gaming Playlists for other platforms, updated daily until New Year's.)
Today's entry is all about the PSN, the consistently impressive service for downloadable games on the PS3.
What did I play? And which two games did I finish?
Take a look below:
My 2008 PSN Playlist
(Games I completed are italicized)
1) Bionic Commando: Rearmed - I could barely see this game on my standard definition TV. And it was a bit too hard for my tastes. I tried a few levels across a few sittings, then gave up.
2) Burnout Paradise - I loved this game so much on disc that, when the opportunity arose to get it as a downloadable game, I bought it with my own money and started it over. I love the idea of an open-world game that is always accessible on my hard-drive. It's what I would have wanted "Animal Crossing" or even "Home" to be: something I can dip into before plunging into the game I turned my console on to play.
3) Echochrome - I thought I'd really like this, but the controls proved too wonky for me. I wanted more precision, less stuttering.
4) The Last Guy - This arcade game of civilian rescue missions was unplayable on my standard definition TV. I tried it again once I got my high-def set. I found it amusing but disappointingly shallow.
5) PixelJunk Eden - Beautiful, hypnotic and boasting one of the best control mechanics of the year. "Eden"'s swinging and pollinating-side-scrolling-gardening gameplay barely makes sense when written like this, but it's great. And who'd expect the "PixelJunk" series to offer some of the best local multiplayer this side of "Wii Sports" and "Rock Band"?
6) PixelJunk Monsters - Tower-defense games are dangerous to my productivity. Side bonus: I think this was my wife's favorite game of the year.
7) Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty
8 ) Siren Blood Curse - This was the best horror game I played in 2008 and a masterful demonstration of how to present a game in separate episodes. Too bad the digital management of those episodes via the PSN is so cumbersome.
9) WipEout HD
UPDATE: On New Year's Eve I played one more PSN game: "Crash Commando." It's like "Smash Brothers" with guns. Fun stuff!
