I played 16 PS3 games for fun in 2008 and finished seven of them.
As I did last year, I've compiled a list of the games that I played for fun in 2008. One list per major gaming platform.
(Check out the rest of my 2008 Gaming Playlists for other platforms, updated daily until New Year's.)
Today's entry is all about the PS3, a system that was supposed to have a banner year, but managed something that felt more like just a decent one.
What did I play? And which seven games did I finish?
Take a look below:
My 2008 PS3 Playlist
(Games I completed are italicized)
1) Burnout Paradise - This was my favorite racing game of the year.
2) Buzz!: Quiz TV - I thought I was going to love this game's user-generated quizzes. I did play a few of them, but I got distracted by other games. I'll get back to this one.
3) Civilization Revolution
4) The Club - I so wanted to like this arcade-style take on third-person shooters, but the game displayed very poorly on my standard definition TV. So I bailed after playing several levels. Now that I have an HDTV I'm going to go back to it and see if things are improved.
5) Dead Space - A character-driven EA game with non-tedious level design? Even better: it has some good level design. And it looks and sounds great. Plays well, too.
6) Devil May Cry 4 - This was my first "Devil May Cry." The game cracked me up. It's as cheesy as can be, but arms the player with some of the coolest fighting moves I've ever performed virtually. Unfortunately, it also has some of the most tedious level design I've played. Too much backtracking. Too many levels that repeat environments. Still, the Devil Bringer power is unbeatable.
7) Fracture
8 ) Lego Batman - A guilty pleasure in a series I think I'm ready to abandon.
9) LittleBigPlanet
10) Mercenaries 2: World In Flames
11) Metal Gear Solid IV - Stunning. Daring. Melodramatic from beginning to end. I hope more games are made with such distinct creative vision. And I hope more developers utilize this game's underrated deployment of a five-act structure.
12) Mirror's Edge - No one opened a door better in 2008 than Faith.
13) Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
14) Resistance 2
15) Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy
16) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - I didn't play much of this game in 2007 and started it over in 2008.
(Game I missed - Valkyria Chronicles)
