Blizzard Execs Haven't Started 'Lich King' Yet, Need Naming Tips

Posted 11/13/08 1:00 pm EST by Tracey John in blizzard, PC, world of warcraft

Today the new "World of Warcraft" expansion "Wrath of the Lich King" is in stores.

If you're a veteran player, you've got two choices: you can create a brand-new, level 55 character as the Death Knight Hero class or you can play your existing level 70 character to get to the new level cap of 80.

(Or you could be ambitious and try to do both at the same time.)

Last night at the "Wrath of the Lich King" launch in New York City, I asked Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime and executive VP of product development Frank Pearce what they've been doing.

The Blizzard co-founders told me that they haven't played the game yet. But here's what they're planning to do:

"I haven't had time, so tomorrow I will actually log into 'Lich King,'" Morhaime said. "I'm debating on what I want to do. Right now, I'm sort of leaning towards starting up a Death Knight first and playing along with a bunch of my friends."

As for naming his Death Knight, he was stumped. "That's a good question," he said. "I just started thinking about that today but I haven't been able to come up with anything."

When I asked if he's going to use the random name generator, Morhaime replied, "I've tried that in the past, but I think that for my Death Knight I'm going to pick something on my own."

Pearce hasn't logged onto "Lich King" yet either, but for a different reason. "I like to experience the content for the first time when it's commercially released, so I try to wait until it's launched if I can," he said. "I did a little bit of the beta but not enough to spoil it for me."

While he hasn't logged on, Pearce does have a plan for what he wants to do first. "I'm going to level up to 80 with my main [character] because I don't want to fall behind our guild's progression group. I fell behind on [the last expansion] 'Burning Crusade,' so I want the opportunity to do raids and stuff with them."

He also told me that he hasn't thought of a name for his Death Knight, and he won't be thinking about it for a while. "I've used [the random name generator] before, but I hit it many times until I get the name that suits me. I also don't know what race I'm going to go with either, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it."

And for the record, Pearce's main character is a level 70 troll rogue.

"WoW" players, what about you? What will you be doing? Right now I'm playing a Death Knight.
