As Tracey John lamented on Wednesday, "Mega Man 9"'s difficulty might be a reason for people to stay away from the game. A demo, however, is no big deal. A demo is safe.
Or is it?
Nintendo doesn't have WiiWare demos, so Capcom didn't produce one. On the PlayStation Network, however, Capcom released a one-level trial of the blue bomber's 8-bit return to form.
Except this demo includes one of the most difficult stages: Concrete Man.
Concrete Man was the first robot boss I tricked to tackle in the WiiWare version. He reminded me of Guts Man from the original "Mega Man," which provided a bit of nostalgic comfort early on, knowing I was most likely going to be experiencing pixel death several thousand times before my journey through "Mega Man 9" came to an end.
Except I never made it to the end of Concrete Man's stage. More than that, I haven't been able to make it past the half-way point, which is a checkpoint. I need to bulk up on some additional energy packs in order to do that. Reason being: there's a trio of robot elephants that toss tightly patterned balls.
There are many hard areas in "Mega Man 9" that require trial-and-error before passing, but none have stumped me quite as quickly as the robot elephants in Concrete Man's stage. It's not that I'm implying "Mega Man 9" isn't ridiculously difficult -- in fact, I think it's the hardest "Mega Man" game ever made -- but Concrete Man isn't the best way to introduce people to that difficulty curve.
Why not allow them to tackle Galaxy Man or Splash Woman, whose stages and boss patterns are manageable without items or unlocked weapons?
"Mega Man 9" is meant to frustrate you, but if I was a fan mildly interested in this week's nostalgic craze, Concrete Man's stage might turn me off.
"Mega Man 9" was released on WiiWare and PSN this week and arrives on Xbox Live Arcade next Wednesday. Chances are the Xbox 360 demo will be the same.
