"Mega Man 2" is my favorite video game of all time.
Can you understand why I might be a little excited about "Mega Man 9," given that Capcom has publicly said it's being modeled after my favorite game ever?
I play through "Mega Man 2" at least once a year. It's a good reminder of old school game design and to keeps my invisible platforming skills sharpened.
Continuing what I'd started last week, I decided to play through "Mega Man 2" again.

So much has been said about "Mega Man 2" already. If you've found yourself curiously interested in checking out "Mega Man 9" but (shamefully!) don't have much experience with the "Mega Man" series, this is the one to play. "Mega Man 2" is arguably where the series peaked in terms of design originality and remains a blast to play.
In addition to dropping the score mechanic found in the original game, "Mega Man 2" introduced key features to the series that would remain staples to this day:
* E-Tank to refill Mega Man's energy at any time
* You can't return to levels you've already beaten
* Password system that keeps track of your progress
Yes, there was no way to save in "Mega Man." At the same time, no "Mega Man" really takes more than an hour or two to complete. But it's nice to have just in case. And contrary to popular belief, "Mega Man 2" does not have the slide move or a chargeable buster. These features didn't appear until "Mega Man 3" and "Mega Man 4," respectively.
Even though "Mega Man 2" has been talked about to death, you cannot compliment the game's soundtrack enough. I have several "Mega Man 2" cover albums in my iTunes list because the melodies are that addictive. Whenever I play, they get stuck in my head for days! I have "Heat Man"'s stage running laps in my head right now.
Next up, "Mega Man 3."
