‘Pretty in Pink’ Game Has Three Endings (Yes, Three)

If you have any affinity for ’80s movies, you’ve most likely seen the John Hughes classic “Pretty in Pink.”

The “Brat Pack” film starred Molly Ringwald as a fashionable yet poverty-stricken teen who falls for a rich kid outside her social circle. All the while, her best guy friend is in love with her — naturally, drama ensues. In the end (you should have seen this by now, sorry), she still ends up with the rich guy, but many fans wanted her to go with the best friend.

And if you’re one of those fans, well, the “Pretty in Pink” game from Legacy Interactive will give you the ending you’ve always wanted, as well as… another one?

Producer Don Marshall assured me that the movie’s plot will be followed more closely than those of “Clueless” and “Mean Girls,” which he is also working on turning into video games. In “Pretty in Pink,” players will take on the role of Ringwald’s character Andie Walsh as they go through the storyline via hidden object-style gameplay. “You’re going to be finding objects in order to put the TRAX record store back in order before Blane shows up, and getting your father ready for work by putting everything he needs together before you send him off,” Marshall said.

He also revealed that the game will feature elements not typical for hidden object-style games. For one, players will be able to collect two objects throughout the entire game — sports cars or rubber ducks — and depending on how many of each one the player finds, they’ll be able to experience the different endings. If the player has more sports cars, they’ll get the traditional ending where Andie ends up with rich guy Blane; but if they collect more rubber ducks, they’ll get the alternate ending with Andie getting together with her best friend Duckie.

I asked Marshall what inspired the alternate endings in the first place. “I’m very pro-Duckie,” he admitted. Though he was happy with the film’s ending when he first watched the film near its release, re-watching it for the project made him want it to go the other way. He also explained that the Duckie ending was the original ending and that fans were split over who should get the girl.

“Since we have the option to re-approach things a little bit, why not give the player that chance to give the game the ending that they wanted to have?” he said. “And Paramount’s just been super through the entire thing; they’re letting us have fun with these and trusting us to give the players what they want.”

Marshall mentioned that there’s also a third ending they’re working on, but he wouldn’t reveal any details just yet.

What could it possibly be? Guess we’ll find out when “Pretty in Pink” is downloadable on PC in December.
