You can't help but laugh at 1994's "Street Fighter" movie, but "The Legend of Chun-Li" screenwriter Justin Marks doesn't want the same reaction.
"I grew up with the 'Street Fighter' games," said Marks in an interview with Newsarama that was primarily about the "Bionic Commando" comics. "I don't see them as cheesy or funny, but as serious characters that deserve to be explored in their own right."
Marks said the atmosphere in Hollywood is different these days, thanks in part to the success of darker movies like Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins." However, he noted, "I'm definitely not comparing 'Street Fighter' to 'Batman Begins.'"
Whatever you think of video game movies, they do appear to be treated more seriously these days. Look at the talent once involved in "Halo." Or the Hollywood muscle getting behind the upcoming "BioShock" and "Prince of Persia" films. Even Uwe Boll, though sometimes over-the-top, told Tracey John he wouldn't be interested in adapting a game unless it felt right for the big screen.
Readers, are you happy with the direction the filmmakers appear to be taking with the new "Street Fighter" flick?
