Did Microsoft Rip Off Miis? - And Other Hard Questions We Asked At E3

Want to see some of the E3 coverage we aired on MTV? Check out this piece which aired earlier today and features top guys at Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony answering some of the tougher questions I asked them at E3.

  • To Microsoft: Are Xbox Avatars cribbed from the Wii’s Miis?
  • To Sony: How did you guys feel when Microsoft announced that “FFXIII” was coming to Xbox 360?
  • To Nintendo: What do you think of the hardcore fan’s complaints about Nintendo’s showing at E3?

Answers to all are in the video. And following the video are some segments we’ve already shown you elsewhere on the blog, featuring more talk with the gaming execs.

(Video will not be accessible for users logging in from Canada or parts of Europe. Our apologies..UPDATE: A written transcript of this segment is after the jump.)

TRANSCRIPT OF MTV NEWS ON-AIR E3 “TOUGH QUESTIONS” SEGMENT

Sway, MTV News correspondent: (voice-over): E3.. the biggest video game spectacle of the year… or at least it used to be. We dropped in on the new quieter E3 in the L.A. convention center last week and found a lot of great-looking and great-playing games like “Prince of Persia,” “Wii Sports Resort,” and “Gears of War 2.” But while the top three gamemakers battled it out for best-in-show, no clear winner emerged. So after the dust settled, we had to ask some tough questions.

Voice of Stephen Totilo (talking to John Schappert and Don Mattrick): How do you guys have an entire Microsoft briefing, 90 minutes, and you don’t mention “Halo”?

Sway: Sony showcased heavyweight games like “Little Big Planet” and “Resistance 2,” but we wanted to know how it felt to get upstaged by Microsoft who announced that the former PlayStation 3 exclusive “Final Fantasy XIII” was also coming to Xbox.

Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America: What you have with “Final Fantasy XIII” is a lot like what they’ve paid for with “GTA.” It’s not an exclusive on their platform. It’s now a cross-platform game. And I think if you look at how “GTA” behaved in the marketplace and how it drove — or didn’t drive — either console, that’s what I’m talking about. … And it becomes a bit of a jump ball.

Sway: Microsoft wasn’t just crowing about “Final Fantasy.” The company showed off “Fable 2″ and invited Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy to launch the karaoke game “Lips.” But the question on our lips Did Microsoft crib the new Avatars system from Nintendo’s Miis?

John Schappert, Vice President, Microsoft: Certainly there are avatars on other consoles, on other avenues. They’re all over the web. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that there’s certainly been inspiration from all over. But to me that’s not what caused us to go that path. What caused us to go that path is it’s a logical extension of our Gamercard and Gamertag.

Sway: Nintendo made a splash with what might be one of the wildest music games yet.

Shigeru Miyamoto (on stage): This year I would like to introduce you to “Wii Music.”

Sway: “Wii Music,” featuring over 50 playable instruments. But the house of Mario left some hardcore fans complaining that the game company had abandoned them. True?

Reggie Fils-Aime, President, Nintendo of America: This mentality that we have somehow lost our soul and [are not] speaking to our fanbase, there is nothing further from the truth. And if you talk to Mr. Miyamoto, you really understand that we have the interest of our core fanbase right at the top of the list.”
