A First Look At The Only ‘Dark Knight’ Movie Game

Recently Multiplayer investigated the lack of video games tied to some of this summer’s blockbuster movies. And one of the movies in question was Warner Bros.’ “The Dark Knight.”

So far, no movie-based console game has been revealed, but last week I spent some time playing the only “Dark Knight” title that’s been announced to date — the “Dark Knight” mobile phone game.

On the same day the film hits theaters, Glu Mobile will be releasing a 2D side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of Batman’s NES classics and centered on the events that happen in the upcoming film. It’s even going to have a Joker modeled after the late Heath Ledger’s interpretation of Batman’s crazed foe.

The action takes place on the streets of Gotham (natch). With his utility belt firmly stocked, Batman heads out into the night to take down as many of the Joker’s henchmen as possible. As you play through the game you’ll get to use all of Batman’s toys, like the Batterang, grapple gun, and even Bat-bombs that you can drop while grappling from building to building.

The game is very easy to pick-up and play with one hand, with all the action taking place using the arrow keys and the “OK” button, or the keypad and “5″ button depending on your phone. Even with the limited nature of the arrow keys, “The Dark Knight” still manages to offer a variety of attacks and even combos, which is best seen when fighting in hand-to-hand combat.

For example, if you press the up direction, you’ll kick, but if you press up then down you’ll do a roundhouse sweep. There are even stealth attacks; if you sneak up on an enemy from a direction they aren’t looking, you can take them out using a one-hit kill delightfully called “The Mangler.”

The 20-plus levels are your standard platforming fare; just get from the beginning to the end without dying. A couple of the levels I saw had additional goals; in one you had to take out all the barrels of toxic waste using only your Batterang, and in another you had to sneak through the level, hiding in doorways to make it past the enemies. There appeared to be a nice assortment of mechanics to change up the pace of the game as you progressed through.

“The Dark Knight” will be out worldwide July 18th, released alongside the movie on most handsets. It will also see a release later this year on the N Gage platform, with additional content including updated levels, art and community features. Neither version of the game requires you to wear a cape, or have a secret identity, but who am I to stop you?
