What We’re NOT Playing - Volume 32 (Sorry ‘Pop,’ Future ‘SSX’ Title?)

notplaying_pop.jpgIf you’re not busy at pre-E3 festivities, you’re probably playing a lot of WiiWare.

Which means some other games are getting the shaft — even some Wii games. While I’m thinking about trying “We Ski” (whose cover art I loved by the way), my colleague Jason Cipriano doesn’t even want to go down that slippery slope (sorry):

JasonCipriano: I’m too big a fan of “SSX” (prior to the last two releases) to offer up my downhill love anywhere else
TraceyJohn: there are racing modes in “WeSki”
JasonCipriano: yeah, there are
JasonCipriano: But they don’t appear to be even remotely close to “SSX” and all its glory
TraceyJohn: Would you like an “SSX” with the board?
JasonCipriano: If they are making “Skate” with the board, “SSX” seems like a natural next step.
JasonCipriano: I’d have to play it first, but I fear it could very easily suffer from the same problem as the Wheel
JasonCipriano: where it doesn’t offer the same level of precision that I’m used to.
JasonCipriano: So we’ve digressed to the point where we are talking about not playing games that may or may not exist.

Read on to see what else will get ignored this week with all the WiiWare madness…

TraceyJohn: While everyone is in San Francisco this week for pre-E3 festivities, it looks like you and I are left here to play some games
TraceyJohn: And also … not play them
JasonCipriano: As the case may be.
TraceyJohn: WiiWare was a big launch this week. You had to make some tough choices because of memory issues.
JasonCipriano: I did. Choices were made, feelings were hurt.
TraceyJohn: But let’s say you have all the room in the world. Would all six have made your cut?
pop.jpgJasonCipriano: I never really had any intentions of playing “Pop” or the “Final Fantasy” game
TraceyJohn: Why not, may I ask?
JasonCipriano: I’m a fan of simple games, but “Pop” just seemed a bit too simple for me. Don’t get me wrong — I love popping bubbles, but maybe not virtually. I’ve also heard it described as a multiplayer-only game, of which I’m not really a fan, and already have “WarioWare” for things like that. And for $7 bucks it seems like a bit too much when I could get a classic NES, or almost a SNES or Genesis game for that price
TraceyJohn: That’s true. Other games seem to have more to it, and are cheaper
JasonCipriano: As for the “FF” game… I just don’t know that much about it, plus, I’m not ready to have my Wii milk me of my points via mictro-transactions just yet
TraceyJohn: Right. I’m not sure ,I’m ready for that either
TraceyJohn: As a trivia guy are you going to try “TV Show King“?
JasonCipriano: I thought about it. If I had the space and the money I may have picked it up.
JasonCipriano: It was kind of on the bubble of being on the bubble for me
JasonCipriano: So, what are your thoughts on the initial WiiWare offerings?
TraceyJohn: I’ve got “LostWinds,” which I like so far but still thinking about what to buy next besides “Defend Your Castle,” which Patrick seems to like
JasonCipriano: “Defend Your Castle” is a pretty good pick, just don’t go in expecting a whole lot of game.
TraceyJohn: I’m not sure I would pick up “Pop” either for the same reasons
TraceyJohn: And I’m still thinking about “FF” and “TV Show King”
TraceyJohn: But WiiWare aside what are the other games we’re ignoring? Did you pick up anything from XBLA this week?
myst.jpgJasonCipriano: I won’t be playing “Assault Heroes 2.” I wasn’t a fan of the first, so I don’t think I’ll give the second a try.
JasonCipriano: Nothing against the first one, it was just kind of mediocre
TraceyJohn: agreed. What about “Myst DS“?
TraceyJohn: Did you ever play the original?
JasonCipriano: I tried, but I think I gave it a shot when I was a little too young, like 10 maybe, so I didn’t fully grasp what I was dealing with, and therefore didn’t make it too far.
JasonCipriano: It may have been what initially turned me off of PC games now that I think about it
JasonCipriano: Because before that I played the hell out of “Wolfenstein” and “Doom” and the mod where you shot Barney the Dinosaur
JasonCipriano: cuz that was big back then
TraceyJohn: playing those at age 10? No wonder you are now a violent, hyper-aggressive person capable of murder
TraceyJohn: But anyway, would you be willing to give “Myst” a whirl on a new platform like 15 years later?
JasonCipriano: I’d think about it, but the reviews haven’t been too kind.
TraceyJohn: There’s also the PSP version coming out
JasonCipriano: I’d be more inclined to play the DS version - the stylus being more like a mouse.
TraceyJohn: There are some Wii sports titles out this week too
TraceyJohn:We Ski” and “Deca Sports
TraceyJohn: Are you all sported out on the Wii or are you ready for more?
JasonCipriano: You going to give those a whirl?
we_ski.jpgTraceyJohn: I will definitely try “We Ski” with my “Wii Fit” board, “Deca” if I have time
JasonCipriano: I’ll be sticking to “Wii Fit” for now.
TraceyJohn: Since “We Ski” is the first 3rd-party game for the peripheral I’m curious as to how it well it will work with it
JasonCipriano: If it was a bit more competitive I think I’d be all over it.
JasonCipriano: and I’m too big a fan of “SSX” (prior to the last two releases) to offer up my downhill love anywhere else
TraceyJohn: there are racing modes in “We Ski”
JasonCipriano: yeah, there are
JasonCipriano: But they don’t appear to be even remotely close to “SSX” and all its glory
TraceyJohn: Would you like an “SSX” with the board?
JasonCipriano: If they are making “Skate” with the board, “SSX” seems like a natural next step.
JasonCipriano: I’d have to play it first, but I fear it could very easily suffer from the same problem as the Whiil
JasonCipriano: where it doesn’t offer the same level of precision that I’m used to.
JasonCipriano: So we’ve digressed to the point where we are talking about not playing games that may or may not exist.
TraceyJohn: oops
TraceyJohn: let’s stick to what’s here and now — namely we’re playing a lot of WiiWare but “Pop” gets no love
TraceyJohn: as well as…
JasonCipriano: pretty much everything else that came out this week.
TraceyJohn: There’s always next week…
JasonCipriano: I’m off to go defend something … hopefully it’s my castle
