Help Us Name The Greatest Reptile/Amphibian in Video Game History

turtle.jpgThis year, we here at MTV Multiplayer decided to find the Greatest Animal in the History of Video Games.

First, we had readers and judges help us name the best horse, canine, aquatic creature and bird.

Now we’re moving on to our scalier, slimier friends — reptiles and amphibians… and we threw in dinosaurs for good measure.

From unforgettable frogs (Frogger) to turtle-like creatures (Bowser) and skateboarding dinosaurs (Radical Rex), we thought of a list of our favorite reptiles and amphibians.

Please write it your favorites (and any ones we missed), and later this month, our excellent panel of judges will choose the animal to represent the species at the end of the year. First up…

paratroopa.jpgKoopa Troopas and Paratroopas in the “Mario” Universe
Bowser’s turtle-like minions Koopa Troopas and winged Paratroopas are Mario’s ubiquitous enemies. A bop on the noggin usually suffices to incapacitate them, but a single touch to Mario causes harm (usually shrinkage) and even death.

The star of the Canadian children’s TV series also has educational video games where he goes to school and hangs out with friends.

turtleodyssey.jpgOzzy in “Turtle Odyssey”

tmntarcade.jpgThe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Similar to “Crocodile Dundee,” this NES game features a Cajun named Bayou Billy who must fight his way through a Louisiana swamp to rescue his girlfriend. Among his enemies are alligators who are invincible underwater and can only be hit when they jump out of the water. (No fair!)

  1. Logicalman says:

Snake from the MGS series must be removed, he is not an animal, just because his name is snake doesnt mean he is scaly or slimey

  2. Rajiv Miller says:

First off, Megaman 3 was Snake Man, not Reptile Man. But that’s not the worst part of this list. Oh no, not by a long shot.

Where is Frog from Chrono Trigger?

  3. Ben says:

This is not a vote for Slippy. I merely submit this as a ‘Friend of the Court’ brief: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/02/09/

  4. Vichus Smith says:

I have to go with bowser. A ton of great reptiles in this field, but Bowser is not only a great reptile, but one of the best villains in video game history.

  5. MattG says:

I’m really impressed with the variety of options listed here. There’s some great obscure critters that deserve some time in the spotlight.

So who do I choose? As much as I love Bowser, I have to nominate the Koopa Troopas. Bowser gets all the attention, sure, but it’s the Troopas that are out there every day risking their shells for Bowser’s schemes. Besides, the modern Troopas make that cute “wubba wubba” noise when they speak, such as in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour and Mario Kart Wii.

  6. Koontz says:

what no Lizardman from Soul Calibur?

  7. dgw says:

The crocodiles from Pitfall definitely need to be in the running!

  8. vanderblade says:

I have to second the request for Frog from Chrono Trigger to be added; however, the first thing that came to my mind was Gex, even though that game(s) blows. Still, he wins with mind share.

  9. juan says:

What? no, comicbook villies? Lizard from Spiderman and Croc from Batman…cmon!

  10. DouggyD says:

I’m going to vote for TMNT and also agree that snake from MGS shouldn’t be on the list.

  11. pacman_monarch says:

What about almost every character from Primal Rage?! Off the list I’d vote for Bowser though, just because he’s so freakin’ classic

  12. Eleniel says:

Lizzy from Rampage is clearly the winner–and sadly missing from this list! =P

  13. G-Man says:

I must vote for Yoshi due to the immaculate “Yoshi’s Island.”

  14. tónythegamer says:

Yes, squirtle needed to be on the list, and the lizard charmeleon, and the dinosaur bulbasaur.
But my vote goes to Yoshi,. for his awesomeness in MK.

  15. Nic X-treme says:

While he isn’t on the list, my vote goes for Frog off Chrono Trigger! Greatest Amphibian Ever!

If, for some reason, you don’t count my vote, chalk up another one to Yoshi ^_^

  16. Mark says:

First of all, I agree with everyone who says Frog from Chrono Trigger should be on this list. What a horrible oversight.

Oh, and I think we should add Frog-suit Mario.

  17. ima420r says:

Where are the crocs from Pitfall in all their 8-bit glory?

  18. maimoona says:

cant see what the problem is with snake, i think the problem is- does he mean Snake, or the snakes he eats… if he means the person he shud be shot just for calling him a reptile.

  19. DonnyDarko420 says:

My vote is for Squirtle (and the rest of the Pokemon crew), Bowser (or as us old school gamers remember him as “King Kuppa”), or the always awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  20. Chris Pereira says:

Battletoads. I really don’t feel like you need to explain a vote for them.

Poor Tortimer. He’s old and frail, and only gives me gifts when he’s obligated to, so I won’t vote for him.

  21. Jason says:

What about Wart from SMB2: USA?
    http://www.mariowiki.com/Wart

  22. Mr. Krystal says:

I vote for Slippy as top amphibian.
I vote for Bowser as top reptile.

  23. Silas says:

SLIPPY!!! I love that frog :)

  24. P-drone says:

I vote for Slippy as best amphibian.
I vote for Yoshi as best reptile.

Why aren’t the Ocarina of Time enemies, Lizalfos or the King Dodongo, on the list?

  25. V-Starfox says:

    Slippy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Galaxia says:

    GO SLIPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Slippy Rocks!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Guy says:

Where the heck are the dinos from Cadillacs & Dinosaurs? You can’t compile a list and miss these guys from the Arcade days.

(I could rant about other games not being included, but from this list I guess that you don’t consider Dragons as reptiles).

  28. Firebelly says:

hey what about Don Gero the singing frogs in Majoras Mask and (kinda) Ocarina of Time
they were AWESOME!!! add him/them now
i would be voting for don gero and the crew but if you’re not gonna add them then i vote bowser

  29. madafaca says:

What happened with Fox from Star Fox??

  30. Mike says:

    GEX! GEX! GEX! GEX!

Sorry, but when I was a younger lad (i.e. 14), those were my favorite games in the world. I like to think that great games such as “Psychonauts” and the “Ratchet & Clank” series wouldn’t exist without the combination of platforming and outrageous humor found in the PS1 “Gex” games (and I enjoyed the series so much that I don’t care how incorrect my hypothesis is).

  31. BigDogW says:

Hey what about Dry Bones from Mario
