R.T.F.A* Friday: The Return Of Retro

ki.jpgLate in the day yesterday, a rumor surfaced about Nintendo’s impending announcement of the return of “Kid Icarus” at this year’s E3. If the rumor turns out to be true, “Kid Icarus” will be added to a long list of retro-revivals that have all been announced in recent months. The original NES version was a great game, and adding the winged one to the Wii’s library would be great, but it begs the question: Who’s next? There are thousands of properties that haven’t seen the light of day in years. Which ones deserve a revival? Let us know, and check out today’s links:

    I have this theory that the Smash Bros. titles are not games so much as they are museums. The actual gameplay is merely adequate; the real draw, and the boon for Nintendo, is keeping all the franchises fresh in our minds with a healthy dose of nostalgia. Without Smash Bros., I bet that Fire Emblem wouldn’t have made it to the States, EarthBound wouldn’t be coming to the Virtual Console, and Kid Icarus wouldn’t be getting a new iteration on the Wii. (I wrote an essay on this topic a few months ago; it’s linked to my name above.)

    Anyway, regarding other retro games: how about Sega’s Kid Chameleon? I’d be interested to see what they could do with the changing gameplay mechanics.

    Klonoa.
    Haven’t played the console versions, but the two GBA games are great - if we just pretend the waterboarding and autoscrolling and boss levels don’t exist. Particularly the deeply misguided ones in Klonoa 2.
    But a new Klonoa game for XBLA would be very much appreciated.

    So his wife thought it was fun to jack cars and use them to… safely drive around the city. Why’s he judgin’?! Isn’t the whole point of the sandbox that there’s something for everyone to enjoy?

    My boyfriend made fun of me for obeying traffic laws in No More Heroes. I can’t explain why that’s enjoyable… maybe it was only fun because it annoyed him XD;
