‘Metal Gear Solid 4,’ ‘GTA’ Not A Threat To Hollywood

Grand Theft Auto IVAnalyst Michael Pachter, developer Kellee Santiago and reporter Brian Crecente agree: big games like “Grand Theft Auto IV” don’t pose a threat to Hollywood’s summer blockbusters.

You can read their explanations in my story at MTVNews.com.

Here’s a highlight from Pachter on why he doesn’t think “Metal Gear Solid 4” is a threat to the movies coming out against it in June:

‘MGS’ will have no noticeable impact on movie attendance,” [Pachter] said. “Its audience are even bigger geeks than the ‘GTA’ audience, so if they weren’t playing ‘MGS,’ they would be playing some other game.” The theory is that hard-core gamers, when not playing one big game, are spending their time playing other games [rather than going to the movies].

More Pachter and more from the rest in my story at the link above. Hollywood, don’t worry! Unless… is it all a trap?

Are you stupid? Geeks? Perhaps we should look at the people who go and see movies, the general public. You will not see anywhere else in the world such a hodgepodge of idiots, degenerates, illiterates, and substance abusers, as you will in a movie theater. Movies are becoming an outdated form of entertainment. Slowly but surely, interactive entertainment will completely envelope the movie industry. And if it knows what’s good for it, it will switch gears and find new careers in the industry. Halo 3 and GTA4 are the two biggest entertainments releases IN HISTORY. The money’s going their way. Pachter, you are a fool to deny the numbers and the facts. Stop being ignorant and acknowledge the truth.

I would have to agree with the article, I am a huge as MGS man and know literally over a 10 thousand others (through game forums and such)…. when we are not playin MGS, we are satisfying our hunger by playing other games.

Even though this discussion wasnt brought up in the article (interactive entertainment vs movies), AREN is 100% right…
I promise you 99.9% of Metal Gear fans play it for the amazing movie expierence. But the difference is that you are part of the movie. (go onto any metal gear forum, and 100% of the time, the story is whats being discussed. “who are the patriots?” … “why is Vamp an immortal bisexual vampire?” …. “is Big Boss coming back?” etc etc.
Many Halo fans have told me the same thing, I played and completed GTA IV, the whole game is filled with cutscenes that are entertainign and enjoyable.

Movies are dying out, they have lost value for several reasons (such as the illegal pirating and downloading)
Also, i honestly find playing a video game a far more ‘’satisfying” experience than watching a movie, as you are part of the movie.

Basically, movies are for people too lazy to be part of the movie. im not saying theres anything wrong with that. but it is what it is
