Sometimes there's just too much of a good thing.
Right now, I'm debating whether I should show up for a "Ghostbusters" party a few blocks from my apartment.
Being located in San Francisco is typically fantastic, but it's not so awesome when my calendar informs me I have overlapping engagements and need to start making cuts. I'd love to see every game that comes through my city, but I can't. I'm only one reporter.
During the past few days, I've been faced with tackling both the MI6 Conference, a two-day slate of marketing sessions (it's more interesting than it sounds, but it is marketing speak for two days straight) as well as Sierra's spring gaming showcase. And that's not counting other opportunities that prompted me to say, "sorry, my calendar will explode."
I can't talk about the Vivendi stuff for a few weeks, nor can I tell you what I'm seeing on Thursday until next Tuesday. And, sorry, but I'm actually pretty happy about that! I need to sleep sometime, you know.
But it's not that bad. At the end of the day, I'm spending hours and hours in front of all sorts of incredible games that you guys will never see in person until they're delivered in a finished form later in the year or beyond. I respect that level of access I'm granted, and hope to do justice in telling you about it.
Let me give you a glimpse at my schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday:
- Tuesday:
MI6 (9:00 AM -- 6:00 PM)
MI6 Cocktail Reception (6:00 PM -- ??) - Wednesday:
MI6 (9:00 AM -- 6:00 PM)
Sierra Event (12:00 PM -- 3:00 PM) - Thursday:
Nintendo Media Summit (8:30 AM -- 4:00 PM)
"Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway" Event (6:00 PM -- ??)
Date With Girlfriend (????)
Luckily, MI6 and Sierra's shindig were less than two blocks from my apartment.
Seriously, though, I'm supposed to find myself -- in some capacity -- at all of these places over the next few days and turn in daily stories, too. That's not counting impromptu interviews and lucrative social opportunities (i.e. speaking conversationally with the ESRB president Patricia Vance for over an hour, an extended steak dinner with Game Developers Conference organizer Jamil Moledina opposite Newsweek's N'Gai Croal). That eat up time, too.
In addition to all of the event-driven places I need to be at, this Monday I filed a story with MTV News that pulled back the curtain on Microsoft's motion controller. I was fielding requests from all sorts of reporters, sources and friends probing me about it, working on a FAQ to demystify some of the reporting process and simultaneously checking out new leads.
Where does that leave time for writing? Not much, as you can imagine. But I did manage to get this out, and I have a long list of stories-to-write sitting in my notebook. You'll get them soon enough, I promise.
So, do I stop by "Ghostbusters" party? Well, it is only three blocks away…
