Above is a sketch provided by a developer who tells MTV News they have been briefed by Microsoft about a new Xbox 360 motion controller. For more details, check out our full story at MTVNews.com.

Sorry — but not innovative at all. People are going to look at this and question, “Why do something that’s already been done?”. Microsoft is 2 years behind. Face it — the Wii has won the battle among new game consoles.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
A bit late for April Fool’s, isn’t it?
April 7th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Good — maybe this will woo the waggle set over to a platform that actually provides a significant lead in hardware performance. Control advancements without any improvement in hardware performance condemn a platform to novelty status. Nintendo didn’t get it right with the Wii; maybe MS will.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Oh Lord. The naysayers who state that the Wii is destroying gaming will either praise this due to it coming out of MS’ offices, or they will condemn it to Hades for “cashing in on a fad.”
April 7th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Wii sucks…the games are pure crap (besides maybe smash, which doesn’t use motion technology) Yes, it has won over the 12-17 age, but older gamers know the Xbox is still the leading console in games and hardware performance
April 7th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Melissa you are a woman. It is impossible for you to know anything about real videogames or what people want. When people see our Remote they’ll see what they want in a wii.
Do you think wii owners really want to play mini-game collection after mini-game collection? Of course you do because you’re a woman and have the inferior brain.
Real gamers(I.E. not women) want real games. They want to play AAA-quality games like Halo 3 and Bioshock which are only available on the xbox 360 and Games for Windows.
So no Melissa, people wont say that. Because if people thought like that, you wouldn’t have so many choices on what product to clean kitchen with, would you?
The anwser is no.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Wow….. I REALLY think this is fake…..
this has probably been done in f—ing PAINT
April 7th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Melissa know nothing XD, this is a great idea and will make the 360 a more “family” like console, exactly like the Wii. With this new technology the game companies can create “360 sports” and other such games that allow the 360 to be a better family expeince!
Over all, good job Microsoft, can’t wait till this is ready and in the shops
Regards,
Kiki
April 7th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Clearly Melissa you don’t know much about what the average gamer wants. The average gamer wants games like Halo and Call of Duty. With a controller like this, theres no reason why people would pick up the wii over the xbox 360.
Seriously ask yourself, would Joe Everyman who wants the wii for its controller rather play a game like Forza 2 or Mario Kart? Theres a huge chance he wants to play Forza 2.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Seems like wii hasn’t played any wii games. Btw smash bros does use the motion controls and pretty much everyone says it is good.
Anyway I call fake because simply this wouldn’t work on any 3d game due to a lack of a second part. There is a damn good reason why the nunchuck exists for complicated games.
Nope 99% of upcoming wii games will not work on this pos.
“Halo 3 and Bioshock ”
Bioshock wimpy incredibly system shock 2. Hell System Shock 2 is the better game.
Halo 3 snooze fest. Only college fratboys who never came up the ranks playing pc fps consider Halo good. To everyone else Halo is a been there done that fps.
“but older gamers ”
Must be why numerous statistcs agencies show the average wii owner is over 25 while the average xbox 360 gamer is 14.
Anyone who plays live knows how infested it is with imitation punks, wannabe gangsters who sing soprano and would get shanked in the real world for saying the things they do on live.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
It was bound to happen, but still… yikes…
For Microsoft’s sake I hope they can spin this as at least a little original in some regard. I can’t see this working well if the public sees this as a blatant copy of the Wii’s concept. Sure, the PS3 has some motion stuff going on as well, but the SixAxis/DualShock doesn’t look or play like the Wii remote.
April 7th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Melissa- People are going to look at this and question, “Why do something that’s already been done?”
Sometimes people make things that have already been shown to be useful. Every product on the market does not need to be innovative.
When you go to the store, do you buy the most innovative potato chips you can find? No, you buy ones that taste good. Because you aren’t looking for some kind of new crazy snack food. You’re looking for a potato chip.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I think some people are missing the point…this remote wont replace the current 360 controller, it will be just like a guitar for rock band/guitar hero. Some games will take advantage of it, some wont. I have a wii, it was fun for a few weeks. It still is fun with a group of people. But when I want to play a real game, I go to my 360. The wii has no “real” games for gamers. The one who try to do that typically have bad controls because the wii remote while innovative, doesnt work for every type of game.
There is a reason why the game attachment rate for the 360 beats that of the PS3 and the Wii put together.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
“AAA-quality games like Halo 3″
Ahahahahaha. Nice one.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
So what do you consider AAA? Do you consider Killzone AAA? How about Resistance? What about lair? Perhaps ?
Halo 3 is AAA because it did everything it needed to do. It had solid gameplay and the fun pick up and play online that it was known for.
It also had much better writing, voice work and music then alot of shooters on the market.
Games are better then Halo(Half-Life, Haze, COD), but that doesn’t mean Halo isn’t fantastic in it own right.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
I love my Wii, Smash Bros, Metriod Prime, Zelda, the upcoming Mario Kart…. pure Nintendo goodness. I’m also a 23 year old male who considers himself a hardcore gamer…
btw, half-life 1 > halo 3
April 7th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
@Melissa. Are you serious? Nintendo took the idea from someone else as well. The dreamcast even had a motion control controller.
Also, that pic is a joke. Nobody, let alone Microsoft would file a patent or trademark with a pic like that. You and MTV got duped and a bad dupe at that. http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm
Also search patents. Its free. Company all have to list products here for protection. Next time use it before you post a silly picture like it is legit.
Also, for fun, look up the Wiimote and see where Nintendo came up with its “Innovative idea.”
April 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
I Have One Problem With This…
Your Going To Need 2 Hands To Use It….
The Wii Have One Button On The Front
Not 4
I Have A Wii
Played A 360
Wii FTW
April 7th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
This should be another indication that Microsoft is running out of innovative ideas. They realease a half-assed copy of MAC OS (Vista) which is horribly flawed in every way (another 98se disaster???) and now this?
Come on Steve Ballmer, tell your employees to quit copying off of other corporations ideas and start making your own!!!!
Retard!
April 7th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Nintendo started this gamer sh*t and this is the motherf*ucking thanks they get?
April 7th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
If this is true, and Microsoft actualy maks this new remote will increase their sales by a lot.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
T.J. can i have the sloppy 2nds?
April 7th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I dont see why not. If xbox wants one then they can make one. back in the day we all ad 2 buttons and joy-stick now we have 8 buttons and two analog thumbsticks. motion controllers could be a wave of the future.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
This should be an indicator that Microsoft has run out of innovative ideas and cannot come up with its own so therefore it steals ideas from other companies and claiming them as their own.
They made a cheap and flawed imitation of Mac OS out of Vista and now this?
Steve Ballmer needs to go. He is allowing his company to wait until something innovative comes out (from a competitor) and then steals that to make a quick buck.
Microsoft’s CEO’s are retards. They never had anything innovative to begin with. I know. I have studied the history of IBM, Mcrosoft and Linux computers several times.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
@ Austin: Nintendo started what? Atari started gaming. Nintendo brought home gaming back after it died down. Since then however, they’ve been dominated by Sega, Sony and now Microsoft.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
T.J. says:
“April 7th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Melissa you are dumb twit of a %*?#, the Wii did not win. Nintendo is creating false demand by not putting out enough consoles. Wii is a fad. 90% of the games suck balls, I would have more fun jacking off and busting one between your eyes skank.”
A little harsh? This person has stated her opinion, and you act like she kicked your dog. Grow up a little bit…sheesh.
BUT - she is right. Microsoft is only MEDIOCRE at best at coping other people’s ideas. The ‘copies’ always pale in comparison to the original.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Definitely interesting! Motion control is true next gen, I’m glad Microsoft sees that and puts up some real competition for Nintendo. I’ve held out getting a 360 but I might have to buy one now, if this new controller gets good support. Just played Medal of Honor Heroes 2 today, it shows how much motion controls can improve a game. Hope they make the backlog compatible with the new controller, for games like Bioshock, Portal and of course Halo 3. A Wii Sports killer would be unbelievable!
April 7th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
“…Of course you do because you’re a woman and have the inferior brain”
Ok Jeff, woah. No one talks to a lady ike that. You have no right.
And speaking of the controller; its a neat idea, and I feel that many xbox 360 gamers would readily accept this new add-on for their console. Keep it up.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Real games? REAL GAMES? The last time I checked in Video Game history, the real games didn’t start out as first person shooters but more like games like Mario and Sonic unless you want to go back further to the arcade stages of gaming. Saying Halo 3 is a real game is like trying to change history. Sorry folks, Nintendo makes real games. The others just make games for people that can’t figure out how to press buttons rapidly.
Microsoft, although you’ve copied many times, such as the sidebar in Vista and now this controller, I can agree that you did it for your survival.
First person shooters aren’t bad, just not the original video game.
Dominated by MS? MS is being dominated by BOTH PS3 and Wii. The Wii is a fad? More like Halo 3 is a fad. Half the people that got it don’t play it that often anymore. It’s a good game but shooting people down gets really boring after a while. Doesn’t matter if your opponent changes.
Also, bad idea to dis people like that esp. involving sexism. Who gave you, Jeff, the right to decide who plays video games and who doesn’t? The fact that the justification used is “women are inferior” makes the person making the justification rather inferior themselves. Also, not the best way for you to get girls…unless you want something else. Let’s not go there.
As for the controller, it’s not a bad idea considering motion sensing is quite a fun thing to play with and that the remote itself can be used for other things such as controlling a PC.
April 7th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
I love how all of the detractors use points that are becoming less and less true. No good games which use the controls No More Heroes, Pro Evolution Soccer, Bully and Zack and Wiki prove that wrong. There are also quite a few quality Nintendo offerings including Metroid, Galaxy and Brawl. The library is starting to shape up and have an assortment for a variety of ages. I am seriously offended by the way that people immediately dismissed a Woman’s opinion for her gender. If thats what a Hard Core gamer is I am glad I never counted myself as one.
The fact is developers are starting to figure out what works and what does not. Let it go
April 7th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Thats so original. Microsoft is just desperate now.
April 7th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
ok to those who r saying that the “older” generation knows that the 360 is the best that proves ur a fanboy. go ahead and argue but that just proves it.
sure its kool, its innovative, and a complete rip off but hey i guess this is MS new strat. do wutever to make money rite?
yeah and uh u guys talking serious #$?$ to the lady need to seriously back u never talk to a lady like that.
all i need to say though is im not buying because it probably has like red motion sensing rings of death or somethin. ill only get it if this thing is seriously got no major issues
April 7th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
To me apple and nintendo have the same focus on products and the way I see it is Microsoft ripped off Mac OS, Ipods and are now trying to get into nintendo’s turf (god damn Rare buyout YOU BASTARDS!) by ripping off Nintendo’s wii remote. I also don’t think this would work because the analog stick is going to be on the remote itself so I don’t see any fps/ any real games coming out for it. And like most products microsoft tries to rip off it will probably fail. See while Nintendo and Sony compete with each other Microsoft rips off everybody and crushes their lemonade stands after pissing on the little kids face. Oh and to me PC’s HAVE THE BEST HARDWARE BECAUSE IT IS UPGRADEABLE. So while I’m playing Crysis on my wicked ass PC and exploring Hyrule Field with my wiimote and nunchuk in hand I laugh my ass off at 360 owners who don’t realise how far down microsoft’s ?$~# is in their throats.
April 7th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
That looks like a MS paint sketch, I MEAN COME ON! You guys are not even trying!
April 7th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Wow. Most of the men replying on this thread calling out Mellisa and being sexist jerks know absolutely nothing about gaming other than the Frat Boy “YO DUDE LETS PLAY HALO BITCH!” mentality.
I have to say this. Even if the Wii is a fad… Even if it has a lot of shovelware… What type of innovation has Microsoft or Sony made that has done anything new like the Wii has? And no, I am not a fanboy. I own all three consoles and both handhelds.
All three systems offer something great. You fools that are picking on a female because she is stating a FACT, are ignorant. The Wii, however, has not “won” the console race. And also, it is not a “kiddie” system. There are plenty of titles on the system that clearly refute that.
Stop being douches.
April 7th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I’m glad people are finally reacting to what Jeff Bell barfed up. Talk about womanpatronizing! F-CK YOU TOO Jeff!
This has been said nicer above, but:
To all out there saying the Wii doesn’t have any real games. Metroid Prime 3 kicks any ass who dare to show itself. The control is the perfect example that Wii is great for fps.
Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games ever made, it’s not for kids just because there’s no guns and blood. Anyone saying that is immature and misses the point of gaming fun.
Sure, SMG could be harder, but I had a ton of fun playing it.
Fun is not for kids. Guns are not for grownups.
Just because the Wii isn’t overflown by WW2 wannabees doesn’t meen it doesn’t have the best (and funniest) titles ever made.
“Do you think wii owners really want to play mini-game collection after mini-game collection? Of course you do because you’re a woman and have the inferior brain.
Real gamers(I.E. not women) want real games.”
Jeff Bell, you suck.
You haven’t even looked what came out after Warioware and Rayman w Bunnies. And again, your ~**% about woman and their inferior brain, whose brain is it that’s left in troglodyte state?! Try see some girls you loser!
Like woman can’t be gamers? I know a lot of womans who like “real” games. And what is real games is NOT for you to state as fact, Jeff. As said, you haven’t read the history well.
Nintendo created what games are today.
They are the only gamecompany from the time when everything started still having their own platform.
Yeah, I’m somewhat a fanboy too, but at least I’m not shutting my eyes for innovations.
April 7th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Congratulations, anonymous poster, your ad hominem attacks have been blocked.
-Stephen Totilo, Editor, Multiplayer
April 7th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
D0ggie is a %@@@@$, was that for me?
Well. F-CK YOU TOO! then. I don’t really give a #~## about your opinion since it sucks.
You haven’t tried Metroid Prime 3, the controls are awesome, you don’t know #~## about what about I know. Maybe a lot of games are aimed for kids, that doesn’t meen that also the best games are for Wii.
“For the most part it is a kiddie system.”
No. It is a system for people that thinks games are about fun. If you think fun is for kids, then hey, hope you’re a kid, otherwise you must be pretty bored.
And as I said.
Fun is not for kids. Guns are not for grownups.
“Welcome to ~~?$~@# Nintendo Gamecube version 1.35″
This comment only assures to me that you think the graphics meen everything. Which is lame.
Sure, graphics are nice. But doesn’t affect gameplay.
If you think gameplay is inferior to graphics, you’re not a gamer. You’re an immature dork.
April 7th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
This isn’t stealing, copying, or anything else untort. I leave it to the patent lawyers to make sure it doesn’t violate IP law, but if it doesn’t…
This is the market at work. MS has always stated their console is a multi target device… family/casual gamers have spoken and said “we want motion sensing remote style controllers” so MS is delivering them… what the hell are they doing wrong? in order to innovate you have to get to the starting line.
1) Mario, Sonic, Samus are the ~~?@, and real hardcore gamers don’t knock them. We’ve just added the Master Chief, Tony Hawk, and a few others to the list as we’ve grown up. 2) PS3 is an amazing machine… it is however not a glorious gaming system… its a built on a data center platform, which would be cool if enterprise developers were interested in leaving their 90K/y jobs to develop games… I can dream… 3) Smash doesn’t use motion sensing at all. Even the menus are selected with the joystick/d-pad.
Gamer chicks rock, they know tend to be great at team games on halo, they bring over snacks when they play, and getting some after winning 10 rounds in a row (on live) is really the best way to end a night…
April 7th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
wow this is the funniest s-hit i have ever read. with so many retarded borderline gay comments am amazed you people can pick up a controller for any game console and know how to use it let alone comment on it.
the so called prototype is a complete rip off and is a lame april fools joke at best.
the sexist fa-ggotty remarks made by the countless virgins on this thread will ensure that you remain a virgin till you forget how to use your own “joystick”.
all three consoles have a market that they cater to and from time to time will attempt to reach out into each others market to achieve greater profits. if MS does create this remote which undoubtedly looks like the bastard child of the wii remote that is their most recent attempt into a new market.
the morons who think women cant be gamers have probably never seen an actual woman outside of their computers screen or aside from their mother and probably never will
Wii has won the next gen console battle but not the brand war so PS3 and Xbox 360 d-ck riders should just fall back regroup and take this whooping like men and stop crying on posts like the
b-tches you are.
nintendo forever
April 7th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Wow, blatent ripoff from the Wii. And for all the Wii haters, yeah it’s not powerful enough to have individual boob physics like DOAX2, but people talk about it like it looks like an Atari 2600. And Nintendo is still able to create amazing games (Zelda, Smash, SMG, Metroid, and soon Pikmin and Animal Crossing). Yes, I own a 360, but Wii is still my favorite because Nintendo games own. Also, it’s filled with shovelware crap, but I have a simple solution to this problem: Don’t buy shovelware crap.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
IF this was real, which i don’t think it is perhaps these will release with an update adding a browser to the Dashboard… would make sense. I still don’t believe this though. Motion controls aren’t very good.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Hahahaha, of course the 360 one doesn’t have a strap.
Just a disaster ready to happen.
RRoD or busted TV?
The choice is yours.
Wii FTW
April 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
LOL!!! Well look what we have here. Microsoft has always had a problem since back in the Xbox days. That problem is called identity. The 360 needs to take a good look at itself in the mirror because trying to imitate the other players will get it know where and fast! LOL!
Next they’ll be trying to go after women and the casual crowd! Oh wait……..
April 7th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
“Control advancements without any improvement in hardware performance condemn a platform to novelty status.”
actually it can work the other way around too. nothing like shinier graphics and nintendo 64 interfacing.
and wii fps > 1996 thumbstick fps
April 7th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
@ Melissa,
The Wii already has brand awareness that Microsoft couldn’t get if it tried. I mean the console already had a year start and that has done nothing to improve it’s position in the market as PS3 is hot on it’s heels and Wii dominates in the lead. For Microsoft to all of a sudden switch their marketing focus as a console that put emphasis on motion control would take a miracle. Just like the 360 vision camera, the consumers will not think much of it. And devs wouldn’t support it either as this will drastically alter their comfortable development environment.
People fail to realize that time and money has to go into research to include motion controls into a game. I seriously doubt 360 devs will invest that time and money already on top of there insane HD game budget. Simply put, they won’t think it’s worth it!
April 7th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
For those who think Wii is just a fad, and has no CORE games.
Wii has been virtually sold out since NOV of 2006 it has outsold 360 AND PS3 EVERY month since launch I would say that Wii has outlived its Fad phase and become the most viable platform this gen. As for games not being core and only mini games, heres a list of games I personally own: Call of duty 3, Driver, Ghost Squad, Godfather, House of the Dead 2&3, Legend of Zelda, Manhunt 2, Medal of honor heroes, Metroid Prime 3, Mortal Kombat, Need for Speed carbon, No More Heroes, Redsteel, Resident Evil, Scarface, Sonic ATSR, SSX blur, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Smash bros brawl, Tiger Woods, TMNT, Smackdown VS RAW, ZACK & Wiki.
All types of games, new ways to play, thats innovation, what good is a game that looks great an plays like crap? I rather have a new experience. NINTENDO has always been the innovators of controllers and everybody always copies. Heres a list of things Ninrendo made MAINSTREAM and innovated and ever since it has become standard : D-pad, shoulder buttons, Analog sticks, RUMBLE, Wireless 1st party contollers, and now MOTION controllers. Face it Nintendo is now the dominant force in both home and handheld markets, and this is from a 27 yr old Married man. I love my 360 and PS3, but Wii is where its at.
April 7th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Whats the problem here exactly? Microsoft decides to offer gamers a choice to the wii and its a bad thing?
Basically what I’m hearing is Microsoft should of never come out with their flagship Xbox live because Sony had something that resembled online.
I guess following this logic only Ford cars should have wheels and seats because they did it before the rest. Maybe Walmart should sell clothes and food because Kmart beat them to it as well?
Or $@#%, maybe we should @?#% on Nintendo because they’re not the first to make a console or use Motion controls.
@ lacklustah Oh yeah, totally. Which must be why the wii waggle works better then the thumbstick. Oh wait…..
@ Hater: So basically if games still looked like PS1 era @?#% it wouldn’t matter because the control is diffrent? Graphics, A.I., Physics, and all that other good stuff is just as important as the controller set up.
@ D0ggie: What mature titles are currently out on the wii? RE4?
@Sir-G: Oh yeah, Microsoft needs to survive alright. They’re bleeding money all over the place they’ll be in bankruptcy by next year!
By the way, I’m glad you morons are fighting with Jeff Bell. Try looking up his name on google.
April 7th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
@ particle
i think maybe you’re inexperienced with titles like metroid prime 3 and medal of honor heroes 2. they both control with more fluidity, more speed, and more intuitively than any dual analog game.
and lol at gloryfing this misogynist jeff bell. maybe if he understood women’s role in the wii’s success he’d have market share… “Oh wait…”
April 7th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
I am consistently amazed at the level of immaturity and misogyny people are willing to resort to behind the anonymity of the net.
All 3 current consoles appeal to different segments of the video game population and each one will find it’s niche. There’s various advantages and drawbacks for each console that are perfectly valid. It’s hard to argue at this point that one console is fundamentally better than another.
At this point, with out more concrete info on this controller its hard to pass judgment. Or god forbid, we actually think about the quality of the games.
I should stop before someone get’s hurt trying to comprehend the adult speak…
