Two Videos Of New ‘Mario Kart’: Wii Wheel Vs Remote

What’s the Wii Wheel good for? I played “Mario Kart Wii” with it this morning. Watch the video and see how it works and (in the second clip) how it compares to remote-only “Kart” controls. Watch the second video after the jump to see which method I preferred.”Mario Kart Wii” comes out in in North America on April 27, bundled with a Wii wheel…

As with all MTV.com videos, it is not available to anyone using computers with IP addresses in Japan, the U.K. and Canada (sorry, Mr. Iwata!).

Well, “Mario Kart” fans, what do you think?

  1. Dan says:

Looks awesome. Can’t wait for this game!

  2. Oskar Skog says:

It Sucks you can’t hold the Wiimote like you do in Excite Truck.

  3. Joel says:

Why didn’t he try the way most players will be playing….GC or nunchuck/wiimote.

  4. Douglas says:

Everybody was saying that it was bad to play with the whell, but with this video it kind of makes more sense than with the wiimote alone… now I’m confused!

  5. Stephen Totilo says:

    @joel

No one had publicly seen how the Wii wheel works with the game. I certainly hadn’t. So I wanted to find out how it worked and to show people. I also thought we should see how it compares to just using the remote. There’s a video online of the team at X-play using the remote and nunchuk. Between us and them we cover just about everything you need to see, I think

  6. Gohan says:

    omg get on with it

  7. TeenTin says:

    @Douglas

    Nothing confusing !
Wheel is surely slightly better than wiimote alone.
But, GC controller is FAR better than wheel !

  8. James says:

    Hi Stephen,

To hold an item behind you, do you need to hold down on the left / right dpad? Or can you just tap it once (toggle)?

    Thanks

  9. James says:

I can’t believe he didn’t point out one of the biggest advantages to using the Wii Wheel…the extra large B button! That’s a huge bonus, since it can be hard to properly press in the heat of things.

It would also make the wheel great to use with Smash Brothers Brawl if you are using the Wii remote only controls.

    Big B Button FTW!

  10. Stephen Totilo says:

    @James

Sorry, but I didn’t ask about that. And I don’t have a copy of the game here in the office.

  11. squeakypants says:

So you can’t use it like Excite Truck? Well no wonder you liked the wheel better, holding the wiimote like that is nowhere near comfortable.

If that’s the only motion setting, then obviously it’s another Nintendo FU to the gamer by requiring you to buy a Wii Wheel to enjoy the game at its maximum. That is if the wheel even feels better than an analog stick.

  12. bora says:

Wow I get excited all over again looking at how the wii wheel works along w/ da game. I can’t wait to play as peach, toad, and mii. GOOD JOB NINTENDO :)

  13. Thomas says:

I am not sure if I like this so much.
The Wheel is excess plastic that I don’t need to store in my apartment.
They should have just spent time tightening the controls rather than giving us peripherals that are going to cost us extra money.

  14. Pegleg Joe says:

    @ James

I think in the first video near the start of the race Melvin says if you hold down left or right then it holds the item behind you.

  15. ph15h says:

Looks Pretty cool. I think I’ll switch back and forth between nunchuk/remote and the Whiil. Like with Brawl between the nunchuk/remote and the GC controller.

  16. The Lazy Canadian says:

Damn, this is the second video on this site I’ve wanted to see. The first one was how to pronounce Kotaku and Crecente a while back. =\

    This sucks.

  17. tim rogers says:

Mr. Totilo, I am in Japan, and I was able to watch your videos.

Check my IP address, if you dare!

If you’re lying about such a detail, why should I trust you about the Wii Wheel?

And why didn’t you ask him why they don’t just call it the WiiL?

    Or the Wii-EL?

  18. Dante Kleinberg says:

I wonder if the Wii Wheels will be sold separately and for how much, if I’m putting together a four-player match and everybody wants a Wheel.

  19. Livey says:

Will the wii wheel be coming to Australia any time soon?

    Looks exciting!

  20. dallas says:

    yall suck

  21. jw65 says:

Wii Wheels are selling separately for about $10

  22. MKwiifan says:

Well on gamestop.com the wheel doesn’t ship til 4/27 , don’t be confused with generic!

  23. bob says:

Hey Stephen, I want to know if you use the remote with nunchuck attached, can you aim turtle shells with the pointer in the remote?

  24. Dave says:

I’m pretty sure that the wheel comes with the game (which is still $49.99 like every other new game).

  25. Chris says:

Only 13 days left now until Mario Kart for the Wii is released on the 11th of April!

Looks like most retailers are charging around £34.99 for the pre-orders. Pick a pre-order up starting at £29.99 from http://www.wiimariokart.co.uk!

  26. lewis says:

this is gonna be awesome the wii wheel does not do anything special but it sure helps the movement and if u live in the uk the game and the wheel toghether is £34.99 and the wheel alone is £6.99 nintendo europe have confirmed it one last thing… I CANT WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. momo says:

what the %~%? its cool in usa in 27 april in uk?

  28. your daddy says:

I have this game in the us already. You don’t need the wheel to enjoy it. I hold it sideways like you do in other racing games on the wii. It works great just like that. My wife and son prefer using the nunchuck.

  29. Vixxen says:

Hey, call anyone tell me, do you actually NEED the wheel to play mario kart… or does it just helpto play the game ?

  30. lgffvvvgubcnkvgge says:

no u dont need the wheel but i think it would be better with the wheel

  31. swit lina says:

Just got a chance to play Mario cart wii.

Playing Mario Kart Wii is easily the most fun I have ever had on the Wii and with further playtime, it could become one of my most beloved games of all-time. With a healthy mix of new and old and a totally unique way to get Mario around the tracks, Mario Kart Wii delivers on every level and has created a benchmark for fun and entertainment that may not be matched.

  32. Scott says:

What a blast this game is! Love the steering wheel. Especially perfect for those gamers who would always turn with their hands anyway with the old controllers.

  33. XBboyy says:

So, what are the main advantages with using the wheel?
I mean watching the videos (without audio, i have no speakers =/) doesnt really show the main advantages of the wheel, besides the big B button..

    can anyone help?
