Live Blogging: First Minutes With U.S. ‘Super Smash Bros. Brawl’

ssbb_box.jpg We knew this day was coming, but we didn’t know exactly when.

But now that time is finally here, as we just received “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” in the mail. Read on as we here at MTV Multiplayer live blog our first few moments with the U.S. version of the game.

***

11:58pm - We receive “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” in the mail. Everyone in the room gasps.

12:01pm - After we catch our collective breath, we open the box and hook up the Wii. System update. We also discuss live-blogging this.

12:06pm - We actually start. Here we go!

12:09pm - Jason Mitchell and Jason Cipriano are actually playing while I type. They choose the free-for-all mode.

12:11pm - Cip chooses Lucas and Mitchell chooses Link. They duel on Yoshi’s Island.

12:12pm - Mitch gets the first kill. He says, “I bitch-slapped him with my Master sword.” Cip says he fell off the ledge. I didn’t see because I was typing.

12:14pm - Cip wins in sudden death. Mitch yells obscenities. Next!

12:15pm - Cip restarts the game because he didn’t create a save file the first time around. They were too excited to play to notice that they didn’t create one. Obviously, you need to save to unlock new stuff.

12:16pm - They start another free-for-all match. Mitch goes with Pit because “he looks cool.” Cip chooses Bowser because he really wants to see his Gigabowser final smash.

bowser_281.jpg12:17pm - They’re battling on level 1-2 in the Mushroomy Kingdom (it randomly put them in level 1-2 on their very first time playing it).

12:20pm - They complain that it’s hard to play because it scrolls across from left to right as they duel. They keep getting stuck on the columns of blocks!

12:21pm - By the way, Mitch is using the Wii-mote, while Cip is using the classic controller. Mitch thinks the Wii-mote feels good, but the d-pad is kind of small for him. Cip says the classic controller feels fine but it “doesn’t feel as good as the Wavebird will.”

12:21pm - Mitch killed Cip because he got hung on a pipe as it was scrolling and then he hit him with his sword while he was immobilized.

12:22pm - They both just died when they fell into one of gaps in the level. Ha.

12:23pm - Mitch just got Pit’s final smash and now Cip is getting pummeled by “small angel-y things.”

12:24pm - Mitch just finished Cip off with the sword. By the way, once you get to the end of the level, the board starts scrolling again from the beginning.

12:27pm - They start the Subspace Emissary mode, which is the side-scrolling story mode, on Normal difficulty.

12:28pm - Cut scene: Zelda and Peach are watching Mario and Kirby brawling in a big stadium.

12:29pm - Cip and Mitch are both Mario fighting Kirby. Mitch is Fire Mario and Cip is good ol’ regular Mario.

12:30pm - Cip just flung Kirby out of the stadium by hitting him with a baseball bat. See ya!

12:31pm - The invasion is starting to happen and the Jasons are fighting the Primids. Mitch is Zelda and Cip is Peach.

12:32pm - Mitch died as Zelda, so he’s now Mario.

12:33pm - The Jasons just beat the first wave of Primids using Mario, Kirby, Zelda and Peach. Cip said it was like “a multi-man from ‘Melee.’”

petey.jpg12:34pm - In the cut scene, the ancient minister of the Primids appeared and revealed some kind of ticking bomb. And then two R.O.B. the Robots showed up to open up the bomb. Something hit Mario and sent him flying off the stage, and then a giant Petey Piranha trapped Peach and Zelda in cages.

12:35pm - Now as pink and yellow Kirby, the Jasons fight Petey Piranha. He’s the first boss.

12:37pm - They both died. Petey knocked them off the platforms using the cages that the princesses were in. Ouch.

12:40pm - After a three-minute break to help me with the digital camera (stupid contraption), the boys continue to try to beat Petey.

12:41pm - After about five seconds into the fight, Cip dies. “I hate Kirby,” he says.

12:42pm - We learn that after dying twice, you lose (both thanks to Cip, who reiterates that he hates Kirby).

12:43pm - Cip died. Again.

12:44pm - Third time’s a charm. After beating up on Petey, they finally defeat him.

12:46pm - In the cut scene, Wario showed up with a big gun, and he shot Princess Peach, turning her into a trophy. Then he stole the trophy and took off. And then the bomb exploded. Craziness.

12:50pm - Now they’re in the sky world playing as two Pits (one yellow and one white), getting a first taste of the side-scrolling level.

12:53pm - Cut scene: a giant ship appeared and dropped a whole bunch of Primids for the two Pits to battle through.

12:55pm - They’re both battling Primids in the sky world side-scrolling stage.

12:56pm - As Pit’s wings flap, he loses feathers. “He’s molting!” Cip says.

12:57pm - After a cut scene showing Pitt finding Mario, Mitch is now Mario and Cip plays Pit.

12:58pm - The pair are working their way to the end of the level. It’s basic side-scrolling at this point.

12:59pm - Mitch says he hasn’t had this much trouble with multiplayer since “Battle Toads.”

1:00pm - They’ve cleared stage two, and they got a bunch of trophies and stickers. Also, Mario has joined their team. Now they have a whopping 4% complete!

1:01pm - They’ve saved out of the Subspace Emissary mode and now they’re in Brawl mode. Cip chooses the Pokemon Trainer and Mitch chooses Donkey Kong. They decide to play on the Pictochat stage.

1:03pm - Cip, who was controlling Squirtle, fell off the end of the platform. Mitch as DK did the same. Obscenities abound.

1:04pm - Cip, now as Ivysaur, is kicking DK’s butt. Mitch doesn’t like DK because he moves really slow. “Like, really slow,” he says.

1:06pm - Charizard is up now, but Cip doesn’t know how to switch Pokemon characters. Or use his final smash, apparently.

1:07pm - The Pictochat board is really random. “It’s not the most exciting level,” Mitch says.

1:08pm - Mitch as DK beat Cip’s Pokemon Trainer. (The record is now 2-1 for Mitch against Cip, for those keeping track.) Now I want to play, so we’ll stop the live-blogging now. See you online!
