Last week at the DICE summit in Las Vegas I interviewed Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce about many things going on in his company. Most of our conversation will appear on MTVNews.com.
But here’s a notable extra for you blog-readers out there.
Did you hear about that list of canceled games Pearce, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime, and company lead designer Rob Pardo presented at DICE? A list of games they said they started making but never finished?
This list, snapped as a photo by Kotaku.
I had some questions for Pearce about it, including why “StarCraft Ghost” wasn’t on it. But first, I asked, which of the game on the list came closest to release?
Pearce: “WarCraft Adventures” was the one that came closest to release. But even so, if we had decided to complete “WarCraft Adventures” we would probably would have had 12 months more of work on it, to polish and get it right.
Some of them were only in their infancy when we decided it was not the right thing. And some of them were further along. I know that for “Pax Imperia” there were a number of people and marketing resources that had been put toward picking a box and stuff like that.
Multiplayer: What about “Games People Play”? That didn’t sound like a Blizzard game.
Pearce: That’s why we didn’t end up doing it. The concept was ,like, casual games. Whatever we can put in there. Card games. Public domain casual games. And it didn’t fit who we were…. That was a long time ago. That was before the first “Warcraft.”
Multiplayer: “StarCraft Ghost” was noticeably absent. It’s not technically canceled?
Pearce: It never was technically canceled. It’s just a focus thing for us right now. We’ve got a finite amount of development resources and a lot of different things that we want to focus on so there’s always the possibility, but right now we’re spending our time on “World of Warcraft” and our expansion “Wrath of the Lich King” and “StarCraft II.”
Multiplayer: Does Swingin’ Ape [the studio Blizzard bought to develop “Ghost”] still exist?
Pearce: Not right now. We just moved to a new campus in the beginning of December in Irvine. All of our development is in Irvine and we had people in three or four different buildings throughout the Irvine area… so we just consolidated everything into one Irvine campus.

Pearce and I moved on to other topics after that. You can read about the rest of our chat at MTVNews.com.

Please release ghost blizzard, Metroid needs some competition and we are all dying to play a really good game which can exceed if not at least equal Metroid in terms of depth, story and combat.
Besides Nova looks more hotter than Samus

I’ve been waiting for Ghost for a long time. If you guys are still keeping it on the back burner, hopefully not too long before you finish it.
