Last month, we posted the first five pages of the brand-new “World of Warcraft” comic, which will be out in stores next week.
The first storyline follows a human who has no memory of his past and becomes enslaved by an orc shaman named Rehgar Earthfury. Writer Walter Simonson told me last month that the book will remain true to the game and appease both longtime “Warcraft” fans as well as newcomers:
“If you’re a longtime player, I think the comic is a revelation about some of the mysteries. There are mysteries from the past that have never been totally addressed within the game, or at least we’re able to address them in the comic in a way that the game hasn’t been able to. … If you know ‘Warcraft,’ I’m hoping it will be really cool to find this stuff out. At the same time, as complex as the world is, if you haven’t really played the game, you’ll learn as much as you need to know to enjoy the story on its own level.”
Not convinced? See for yourself with the entire six pages of the online-only “World of Warcraft” Issue #0, exclusive to Multiplayer. You’ll also get a little more backstory on the roots of Rehgar Earthfury…

[…]While SOTA’s WoW figures were based on generic race and class types, DC’s represent specific characters from the current WoW comicbook. This isn’t just an orc shaman, it’s Rehgar Earthfury, a specific guy with a specific history. But of course, if you don’t care about that, no one’s forcing you to accept it.[…]

Why are the members of the Horde always, always portrayed as nothing more than bloodthirsty savages? It seems like almost every artist, from literature to film, are more inclined to show the world of Warcraft through the eyes of the Alliance. If you look deeper, there’s nothing more disgusting than the humans and their nightelf allies.
January 5th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
ehh thats not entirely true, lord of the clans and rise of the horde didn’t show them as bloodthristy savages, at least not all orcs. Even with the lore change to the old horde its widely accepted that the horde has always had a savage nature. Besides how would you want them portrayed? As fearsome fighting warriors or tea sipping book readers? You can’t take things out on context, not all of the horde is evil, just like the alliance, but both do have some troublesome members, thats the lore, get use to it.
January 8th, 2008 at 1:37 am
bahmat, get over it. The very nature of the Horde is more of savagery than anything else. The bond between the different races are tenuous at best, with many having their own ulterior motives that work against their allies.
Saying ‘there’s nothing more disgusting than the humans and their nightelf allies’ is just as daft and silly as your accusation of everyone treating the Horde ‘unfairly’. The lore says it is so, and so it is.
January 16th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
The horde is a very different situation then the alliance. While I would not say the orcs, trolls, or tauren are evil, far from it. The trolls and orcs are trying to break free of a vile heritage yes, but they are breaking free. But they are all a tribal people who place value on honor and combat prowess. This means they will be portrayed as savages and rightly so. The blood elves and forsaken on the other hand ARE evil. The BE keep an angel in the basement and many serve the Burning Legion. The forsaken wish to wipe out all life on the plant. So yeah, the horde are not good guys. Sorry.
PS: I play horde.
