This was not a good week for me. The only really good thing I have to say about my achievements quest this week is that my Xbox didn’t die.
I ended up with a meager 240 points towards my overall goal of 10,000, which, doesn’t matter now since the reason I was doing this was so that I could focus on “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” when that came out. And now that game is delayed until February. This change is forcing me to not only reexamine my quest, but also my station in life.
How could a merciless God let this happen?
Early last week when the release date on the Smash Bros. Dojo changed from December 3 to T.B.D., and the release date for Japan was changed to January 24, 2008 I held out hope that the game might still come out this year. My rationale was that “Wii Fit” would be released in the states in January, and Nintendo would still want to have a strong release in December, that release being “Smash Bros.” So I thought. Apparently, like so many other things in my life, I was wrong, and the date was pushed to February, 10 2008. While everyone was trying to console me with the fact that Sonic is now definitely in the game -- and that it gave me more time to get 10,000 points -- that’s not exactly how I saw it.
In my mind, by the middle of February of next year, I would either have burned out on “Smash Bros. Brawl,” or have gone pro. Either way, I would have moved on with my life in some capacity. NOW, the game comes out four days before Valentines Day. And within a month and a half of release my girlfriend’s birthday rolls around. I know a month and a half seems like a long time to plan out for, but, mentally I had already accounted for approximately two months of straight "Smash," and now it’s conflicting. These are actually things I need to take into consideration. Needless to say, this, as well as a week's worth of poor gaming choices, have left me a little sour, not only on my goal, but games in general. If I were a marathon runner, I would have just hit the wall.
This week, the bulk of my points (180) came from “Project Gotham Racing 4.” My second racing game in three weeks (it’s not going to take too long for me to burn on out these). I’ve also suffered through a solid 50 points for “Stranglehold,” and played way too much “Puzzle Quest” to only get 10 points. That’s it. That’s all I got this week. I also played about an hour or so of “Yaris” and that’s an hour I’ll never get back. And I threw in “Dead Rising,” and made it to the crucial first save point before realizing I wasn’t in the mood to kill zombies.
Other than that, the “Smash Bros.” delay really killed my willingness to throw a lot of time into gaming this week. Which is a shame, especially since I’ve decided that since I have an extra two months until "Brawl" comes out I should double my goal to 20,000 points. In all honesty, I really don’t think is actually possible.
Upping my goal means a few things.
1. I’m going to have to spend a lot more time gaming than I have, which might actually work out with the extra downtime the holidays will afford me, as well as January being a traditionally dry month for game releases.
2. I’m going to have to use all my resources to score as many points as possible, over the course of as many games as possible. Like them or not. This means “Madden 06,” the 2K6 sports lineup, and “Surf’s Up” will most likely make their way to my Xbox as long as I can find copies of them.
3. I’m going to need to step up my game. 240 points in a week just isn’t going to cut it from here on out.
4. You’re stuck seeing me post about this for an extra 2 months.
As always, if you are interested in following along, please feel free to check out my Xbox Live gamer tag. Also, sorry there is no thermometer this week, he's in the shop being updated to version C.A.T. 20000.0.
