The many arms of the Multiplayer blog reach many sectors of MTV. Today we’ve got some inside scoop on the pricing info for “Rock Band,” a game that many people are expecting, but that so many people are expecting to be expensive.
We’ve been told by our corporate chiefs that, actually, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will launch on November 23 at a cost of $169.99. That package will include the game, one guitar, a mic and a drum kit.
The surprise twist? The PS2 version of “Rock Band,” once thought to be scheduled for 2008, will actually ship this year. The full PS2 package ships December 10 for $159.99.
The PS2 and PS3 guitars will be wireless. The 360 one will be wired. A wireless 360 guitar will be available at a later date, those MTV people tell us.
UPDATE: For those of you who don’t know, “Rock Band” is MTV/EA’s contender for the throne now held by Activision’s “Guitar Hero” franchise. “Rock Band” is developed by Harmonix, the Boston-based MTV-owned studio responsible for the first two “Guitar Hero” games. (”Tony Hawk” developer Neversoft is making this fall’s “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.”)
“Rock Band” garnered the official Best of Show award at E3. Its hook? It’s the first rhythm game to let players jointly play as a band, with one each on the mic, drums, lead guitar and bass.
The new “Guitar Hero” will ship at the end of October, and will cost $90-$100, across every home game-playing device imaginable: Mac, PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii. It’s also set for a DS release. Among its new touches are boss battles (most prominently, featuring Slash).
For a sense of how both games are coming together, check out my MTV News report from E3.
And now back to our regularly scheduled blogging…

So does the PS2 version work with Guitar Hero controllers, or what?
September 28th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Is there any Wii version in the works?
September 28th, 2007 at 6:48 pm
God this sucks. The $170 price is fantastic, but the fact that there won’t be a wireless Xbox guitar at launch is just terrible. I was hoping there would be two 360 bundles, one with a wired guitar and one with a wireless guitar. So now if I want to play the game at launch and I want to play it with a wireless guitar I have to drop $170 AND another undetermined amount in the future on a wireless guitar? That really really sucks. I should be able to buy a bundle with a wireless guitar for $190. What a load of crap.
September 29th, 2007 at 9:43 am
this is kick ass the only thing that sorta pisses me off is that theres 3 wierd instruments for a 360 with 2 wired outlets and i really dont want to get like a four person adapter thingy. excited about blue oyster cult and the who this will most deffinatl blow guitar hero 3 out of the water
September 29th, 2007 at 11:25 am
I’m pretty sure the 360 bundle comes with a USB hub, so no buying any other four person adapter thingies.
September 29th, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Sweet I can hardly wait! What happens if I don’t know how to play the guitar, is there strings or is it touch?
My 360 needs a new game…
September 29th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Wait…guitar, drum kit, and microphone…
What about the bass? Do we need to buy it separately?
September 29th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Guitar and bass most likely use the same controller- you’d probably have to buy an extra or borrow a friend’s to play 4-person co-op. Hopefully they’re backward compatible with the GHII controllers, then most people would have two to begin with anyway… (i can’t wait I can’t wait I can’t wait!!!)
September 29th, 2007 at 2:07 pm
I wonder how they are going to make GH 3 for Nintendo DS?
September 29th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
I don’t think it will be compatible with the GH(2) controller because it’s a COMPETITOR, but then again I’m not positive because Harmonix is also in on Rock Band. REALLY looking forward to this.
September 29th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Here a bit of info…the GH3 wireless guitar will be usable with Rock Band on 360. Rock Band is going to be sold in pieces as well. So if you plan on getting both games you’ll have plenty of wireless guitars to go around.
September 30th, 2007 at 12:52 am
For the Ps3 version, the guitar from GH3 won’t be compatible with Rock Band? True? Cause I would definately prefer and Les Paul model over a Strat.
September 30th, 2007 at 10:01 am
yay! this is sooooooooooooo kick ass
September 30th, 2007 at 2:10 pm

Will our Guitar Hero 3 guitars work with Rock Band???
November 3rd, 2007 at 3:16 pm
rock band comes out 11/20/2007. i know this because i just put it on reserve.
November 3rd, 2007 at 6:25 pm
I would imagine that the PS2 version would use the same controllers as the XBox and PS3 versions, which are USB and not proprietary (as I have understood it). Seems to make sense that they would go for one set of controllers for all platforms.
November 5th, 2007 at 12:13 am
I work remotely, and several of my coworkers have either a PS3 or XBox 360 and GH2. With this game I can get several of my coworkers to play along. I’ve already got GH3 and the controller, and from what I understand from MTV games Rock Band web site, the game WILL work with all GH controllers as well. Will make for a good night of beer and games.

First, Josh, my friend works at a game store and he says they will only sell the full bundle on the release date; individual instruments won’t be availiable until February. Sorry. Maybe you can split it with someone who only wants the guitar or something.
THIS GAME ROCKS! I can’t wait for it to come out.
