Part of my job, aside from waking up at the crack of three-thirty in the afternoon and also complaining that my pants are too itchy, is venturing forth across San Francisco to visit one of the many game companies that have offices here.
Yesterday, Ubisoft was showing off a certain game involving certain Splinter Cells, Double Agents, and the like. Since games do not oftentimes cover themselves, it was required that I trek down to the trendy south of Market Street portion of San Francisco to see the game and take many hastily scribbled notes, some of which I couldn't now read or fathom if I had 13 eyes and the wisdom of Solomon.
Of course, the game is the story: it looks amazing, and I am kicking myself right now over the fact that I am not, right this second, playing it. Yet there's also another story to be had; Ubisoft's San Francisco office is a relatively fascinating place in itself, even if no game development takes place there.
So, consider this a first look at the innards of an actual game company. More will follow: Double Fine Studios (Psychonauts), Perpetual Entertainment (Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising), Sega (Chromehounds), LucasArts (Lego Star Wars II: The Original Series), and Eidos (Tomb Raider: Legends) are all located in San Francisco proper. Others, such as Koei, Sony, Capcom, Konami, EA, and Namco-Bandai are a short distance away.
Ubisoft's Web site can be found here.
And, just for the fun of it, read more about Double Agent here.
