Roominations, The Sequel

Room
Peter Molyneux’s “Room” technology may well allow game developers to change the way they do business. Even if it doesn’t, Molyneux’s got one wicked toolset at his command.

Roominations

95530814600_1
A while back, game developer Peter Molyneux (you may remember him from such games as Fable , The Movies, Populous, Black & White, etc.) told the world he’d created a new set of game development tools affectionately codenamed “The Room.”

Now the details of this technology are a matter for a more technically-minded blog entry. What was important here is what “The Room” meant for people who make games — and probably for those who play them as well. This technology allowed developers to share contents of their individual “rooms,” allowing for the quick and easy creation of in-game environments, characters, and behaviors.

Here’s Molyneux,sitting in a room.

Shock Therapy

BioshockCreepy Mr. Bubbles wears a diving helmet on his head, while his creepy little sister harvests goo from dead bodies. On the plus side, he collects Hummel figurines and she can dance like the sand on a breeze.

Bubbles and Sis are gaming’s Manson and Squeaky Fromme, but the thing is, they’ll leave you alone if you don’t mess with them. In their game BioShock, there’s a whole neatly-ordered ecosystem, and players will have to figure it out in order to survive.

The Ecchs Men

Rumor has it that the new X-Men game, the one that’s been as well received by game critics as a tumor, started out life as an extreme golf game.

The X-Men: The Official Game has three playable characters, one of whom doesn’t even appear in the X-Men: The Last Stand film. Playing it is like possessing the mutant gene for boredom…

School of Schlock!

For the most part, video game developers are sober, sedate folks. Tomonobu Itagaki, maker of the Dead or Alive fighting games, will have none of that.

Itagaki, who’s also responsible for Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, is one of videogames’ most outspoken personalities. He’s not afraid to say what’s on his mind, regardless of whether or not it makes you want to rush into the shower and pray that the scalding hot water will remove the dirt and wash away the creepiness.

I’m Going to Brooktown!

Nerdguy09

At E3, beautiful women lurked near the Brooktown High: Senior Year videogame displays. They handed out pens and T-shirts, and tried to entice fat young males to come look at, and play, this odd PSP dating simulator.

It was the breast of times

Every now and again there is a game that stirs the intellect and elevates everyone who plays it…

Doa_extreme2

Dead or Alive Xtreme 2
for Xbox 360 is about boobies. You play as one of nine women on a
desert island and, go figure, have many sexy adventures, many of which
involve Olympic sports such as hopping on platforms across a pool,
butt-bumping, and limboing.

Quakin’ in a massive way

Activision’s Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is playable on the show floor this year.

Quakewars_1

In fact, 30+ people are playing at a time in one massive battle, all of them scrambling to kill while not being killed in this team-based shooter. With an emphasis on complementary character classes, ground and air-based vehicles, and an absurd array of weaponry, ET is really turning heads…

Pixel perfect

With all the talk about the technology behind our favorite games, sometimes we forget that great games need great artists, too. A few of those great artists are finalists in an exhibition/competition of game-related artwork called Into the Pixel.

Now in its third year, Into the Pixel has dozens of finalists’ images on display in a gallery here at E3. To see many more entries, check out the official website.

Three Things to Remember!

1_293

There are three important things to know about this post:

1) Who wrote it (me)
2) What’s it about (game developers and their love of lists)
3) When it will end (many paragraphs after its novelty has worn off)

At E3, game developers are forced to show their titles over and over. So it’s not surprising that they oftentimes resort to breaking down a game’s important features into a numerical list. It helps both with the organization and the presentations.
